Exclusive: Slot Gods Meets Peter & Sons
Peter & Sons Business Development Manager Yann Bautista Wiberg gives an exclusive insight into the studio
Here at Slot Gods, we sit down with the brains behind the biggest and best online slots out there. Last time we were given an insight into SYNOT Games with an intriguing discussion with Games Product Manager Michael Polák.
For our next interview in the Slot Gods Meet series, we sit down with one of the rising stars within the iGaming industry and spoke to Business Development Manager Yann Bautista Wiberg from Peter & Sons.
Known for some of the most imaginary slots varying from World War I with Kaiser to the criminal underworld in The Mafiosi, Peter & Sons are standing out from the crowd with innovative designs paired with engaging features.
We have the pleasure to discuss the current climate of the iGaming world along with Peter & Sons' ethos. Be sure to stick around to gain an exclusive insight into the one and only Peter & Sons.
Thanks for taking the time to speak with us. Firstly, can you tell us who are Peter & Sons?
Yann Bautista Wiberg: We are a game development studio formed by an international group of professionals and game enthusiasts with broad experience in mobile games and casino game development.
At Peter & Sons, we are a team of 15 people plus some external collaborators and have offices in Yerevan, Barcelona, and some working remotely. In July last year, we released our first slot game and now have 15 games live. We distribute our games through Oryx Gaming and Yggdrasil.
What is Peter & Sons creative process when developing a new online slot?
Yann Bautista Wiberg: It's divided into two main parts. On the one hand, the design of the mechanics, which is an ongoing process, has a team dedicated to it meeting every week (producers, designers, mathematicians, developers) analyzing and discussing new ideas.
Once we have a math model in place, it's handed it over to the Dev team. They draft a proposal, and once agreed, they start producing the assets. Throughout the development process, we have review sessions where everyone contributes with their feedback.
When we started the company, we did the visual part for some of our games first, and then we proceeded with the mechanics. It wasn't optimal, but we didn't have the resources that we have now.
In terms of bonus features and mechanics - is it better to keep things simple or go all out?
Yann Bautista Wiberg: Personally, I like games that are easy to understand and especially easy to explain - which does not mean that they are simple. We want to explore different mechanics and functionalities.
Our latest ones are becoming more and more complex, and keeping things easy to understand - which has been our approach since the beginning - is quite tricky.
Do you think online slots need a big payout?
Yann Bautista Wiberg: It depends on what you mean by big. Many casinos are not happy to take games with huge payouts, so you need to find a balance.
In our experience, those games we released with huge payouts are not our best performing games.
In your opinion, what do you think the best innovation has been within the iGaming industry in the last decade?
Yann Bautista Wiberg: When we talk about mechanics, Big Time Gaming's Megaways have marked a before and after for many developers who try to follow this model, coming out with new mechanics and proposals, which is very good.
I also think there have been many improvements on the back-end side, on all the gamification aspects of the games, and there is still room for more.
What’s your favourite Peter & Sons slot to date?
Yann Bautista Wiberg: It's hard to say. Once you release a game, you start focusing on the next one. We try to improve ourselves with each new game we do.
Monster Blox is a good example. It’s different from the ones we have developed so far as it comes with Yggdrasil’s Gigablox mechanic, plus an expanding reel feature with respins that makes it dynamic and fun to play.
Do you have a favourite slot from another developer?
Yann Bautista Wiberg: There are new games released every day. In an increasingly saturated and demanding market, many try to differentiate themselves, bringing out new mechanics and visual proposals.
Right now, you have many developers who are doing very interesting things, trying to push the limits in different ways, raising the quality of the games in general. It's worth keeping an eye on all of them.
What do you think makes Peter & Sons slots stand out from other games on the market?
Yann Bautista Wiberg: At Peter & Sons, we try to make games that fill the gap between real money and social casino games by creating high-value content with attractive themes, exceptional designs, and 'fun-engaging' mechanics that are easy to understand for all types of players.
I think we are starting to get recognized for it, and that's fantastic!
We completely agree! Last but not least, what’s next for Peter & Sons?
Yann Bautista Wiberg: We're releasing a new game with Yggdrasil called Valkyries. It's going to be exciting to see what its uptake is.
The game has some exciting features, where you can get several types of wilds and lots of re-spins in the base game, which makes it incredibly fun to play. Also, the win potential is pretty high on this one, more than 20,000x bet.
