PearFiction Studios presents an expanding and contracting game area, and all you need for a winning combination are matching symbols landing on adjacent reels. The game area starts off at 5x3, but those reels often expand, potentially up to 6 rows.
10 to Ace are you low payers, with 5-of-a-kind pocketing you up to 1x. A 5-of-a-kind winning combo of the high-pay symbols—safes, gold bars, bags of money, casino chips, dice—can mean an instant win of up to 5x the bet. The stacks of bills Cash symbols carry values between 0.2x and 100x the bet! In order for their values to make their way to your balance, you’ll need a purple frog Collect symbol to land on reel 5. For me, it was fitting that PearFiction Studios released this game at this time of year. 3 Lucky Hippos had me spinning the years back to when I received the Hungry Hippos game for Christmas and due to some overzealous play, I’d been reduced to only 3 hippos by January too. With up to 7,776 win ways and a 5,000x max win, I was hoping this slot might make up for the heartbreak of that Christmas past.
The game’s backdrop is a lovely sunny day floating out on a quiet lake with a mountain or volcano in the background. To go with the relaxing setting, the game starts off with some chilled-out jazz. Nice! Once you start spinning, though, the tempo is upped and you’ll get to enjoy some swing-band jazz. The 3 different coloured hippos sit above the game area representing their individual features. It’s quite amusing to see them fatten up as they eat up coins, potentially triggering their respective Respin rounds. The jackpot values are also clearly displayed to the left of the game area.
I thought 3 Lucky Hippos was pretty fun, which is normal given how partial I am to games with instant cash symbols. There are effectively 3 different Repins rounds as well—Multiplier, Jackpot and Supreme—and all 3 are very enjoyable and potentially just as lucrative. Thanks to the game’s layout, you won’t find anything too complicated, either.
The cash symbols go a long way toward making up for the smaller values of the standard winning combos. I’m also a big fan of expanding reels given what it does to the number of ways you can win. You'll find an RTP of 96% with a max win of 5,000x and high volatility.
