Get bonusBasing a game on a friendless, hermetic slob didn’t exactly strike me as the wisest marketing ploy. But since I started spinning, I haven’t stopped laughing. And since I started laughing, I haven’t stopped spinning. Loner, from NoLimit City, has so much more going for it than its highly amusing aesthetic and a 14,999x top win.

If you like avoiding people, slobbing around your flat and playing computer games, then NoLimit City might have given you the perfect slot! Loner is as packed with laughs as it is fascinating features. There are 3 bonus games, up to 243 win ways, and the max win is worth 14,999x the stake.
The action takes place on a 5x3 game area. A win consists of landing matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel. The 9 to Ace symbols are the low pays. Landing a 5-of-a-kind can be worth up to 1.25x the bet. The symbols with the Windows XP background and the Loner symbol are the high pays. Their 5-of-a-kinds are worth between 1.25x and 5x.
Wilds can be standard, 2x2 or even 3x3 in size. The Monitor symbols can reveal 1 of 4 special symbols: the xSplit splits all symbols on the same row, potentially doubling their values in the process; an Infectious xWays symbol transforms into a normal payer and can split into 2, 3 or 4 pieces, and then it does the same to all other instances of that symbol; the Max Win symbol immediately grants the player the max win. Alternatively, you can win it by landing 3 monitors that spell MAX.
If 3 monitors land, you can trigger 1 of 3 video game bonus rounds. In Tick Tick Boom, you choose 1 of 3 buildings to blow up. If you succeed, you’ll instantly win between 5x and 1000x. You can also trigger the max win.
In Pin the Win, a counter bounces off the walls of the screen, like in the video game Pong. In each corner there are different multiplier values—1x, 3x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x, 500x, 1000x and/or the Max win. The round ends when you finally hit a corner. You’re then awarded its value multiplied by the round multiplier, which can be worth up to 500x!
Shoot Shoot Duck gives you 5 shots. Each shot may hit or miss. The symbols may contain multipliers of between 1x and 100x the stake. The Bomb symbol collects all visible multipliers. The Ammo Clip resets your number of shots to 5. The Van increases its value by collecting multipliers on the grid, so if you hit it, those values will show up in your balance. You might also hit a Max Win symbol. The round ends when you run out of shots.
If you’re outside the UK, you can possibly buy instant access to the different bonus rounds for between 75x and 247x the bet.
The game’s mathematical model is advertised as being extremely volatile, and it certainly feels that way while playing. I hit a few barren patches but was more or less compensated by some really impressive wins later on. I was a little disappointed by the values of the standard winning combinations, mind.
The features are really interesting, so there’s plenty to keep you engaged even in the base game. The Monitors, for example, reveal symbols that can land you a win out of nowhere, or at the very least increase the value of one you’ve already landed.
The 3 different bonus rounds are good fun, too. There’s not exactly a lot to do on the players part, but what you see on screen is really entertaining. I also like how you can potentially trigger the max win at any time. Given the volatility level and the relatively low max win, it definitely feels like it’s within reach.
Monitors can include symbols which split all symbols on the same row, increase the size of all instances of a pay symbol or even grant the game’s 14,999x max win! Land 3 Monitors to potentially trigger 1 of 3 bonus rounds.
In this Bonus, watch as your pong-like counter bounces off the edges of the screen. Once it hits a corner, its figure is multiplied by the round multiplier and is then awarded to the player. Multiplier values are between 1x and 500x; the figures in the corner are worth between 1x and 1,000x!
Choose 1 of 3 buildings to blow up. Succeed in doing so and you’ll instantly win between 5x and 1000x. You can also trigger the max win.
Players get 5 shots, which can either hit or miss. Hit the target and you can win multipliers of between 1x and 100x the stake. Hit the Bomb and the Van and you can potentially collect all visible multipliers. Hitting the Ammo Clip resets your number of shots to 5.
The RTP is 96.06%, which isn’t bad but remember that this slot is extremely volatile. The max win of 14,999x isn’t as big as some Nolimit games, but thanks to the features, both in the base game and the bonus rounds, you can potentially trigger it on any spin, so at least it feels within touching distance.
I definitely noticed the extreme volatility while playing, but because there was always so much going on, It felt like my next big win was just around the corner.
The amount you can win in the bonus rounds depends on which one you manage to trigger. Regardless, there’s always the potential to come away with some really good returns on your wagers.
The game’s set in a reclusive slob’s flat in the 90’s. The grid is an old-fashioned 4:3 telly with a VCR plonked on top of it. In true slob fashion, you can see mouldy pizza slices, empty plastic cups and stains on the torn wallpaper. This all may sound depressing, but the developers have done a great job of actually making it highly amusing.
The grid/telly is filled with 90’s memorabilia. In the background, you can hear elevator music and a shopping-network presenter, who alternates between insults and audacious sales pitches. It’s reminiscent of the radio in the original Grand Theft Auto game.
The 3 different bonus games all have their own retro-computer-game aesthetic and their own soundtrack - think Pong, Alex Kidd, Duck Hunt. The game looks and sounds just as good on mobile as it does on laptops.
I had a smile on my face the whole time I was playing this game. Loner is really original and really funny. On top of that, it’s got some really good features, and thanks to its extremely volatile math model, players are in with a chance of hitting some massive wins.
