AvatarUX has now hopped on this trend with Pixel Paws which feels a little bit like if the makers of Tamagotchi got together and decided to create a slot. But underneath this seemingly simple game lurks some genuinely interesting features and a very decent top prize of 20,000x.
Pixel Paws has 5 reels, 4 rows and the ability to create an impressive 16,807 paylines. There are 10 regular paying symbols: 5 low-paying letters and numbers, and 5 higher-paying animals with the Cat symbol giving you 5x.
It uses the scatter pay mechanic to create winning combos. Therefore, you don't need to match symbols from left to right. Instead, you simply need to match 3 or more identical symbols on adjacent reels to get a win, and they don't need to be touching one another. However, if there is a one-reel gap between symbols, this will not count as a win.
The game also comes with some pretty cool special features, including a Loaded Reel with a Trigger Zone.
To the left of the standard 5 reels that are always in play, you'll find the Loaded Reel. This starts off greyed out, and the top position is the Trigger Zone. Whenever you land a win, symbols will enter the Loaded Reel and nudge upwards to unlock new rewards when they enter the Trigger Zone. On a spin with no wins, the Loaded Reel will refresh itself and start again.
The Loaded Reel contains different prizes in the base game and the bonus game. In the base game, you can activate the Trigger Zone Expansion which is where the Trigger Zone expands by one position downwards. There's also the Grid Expansion where all reels expand up to 3 positions upwards. You can also land multipliers and Low Pay Upgrades that transform lower-paying symbols into higher-paying ones.
Land 5 or more Coins in the base game to trigger the Hold & Win bonus round. During this game, only Coins and rewards triggered by the Loaded Reel can appear. There's also the possibility to find Colossal Coins which carry a value of up to 5,000x.
In this game, you have 3 lives, and you'll lose one on every spin where a Coin doesn't land. If a Coin does hit, your lives refresh up to 3 again.
The bonus game also has some cool features in the Loaded Reel that don't appear in the base game. These include Colossal Coins, coin upgrades, the Treasure Chest symbol that will collect all coins and Collect & Multiply, which is where the Treasure Chest lands to collect all Coins and multiply them as well.

Pixel Paws is a medium volatility game, so you shouldn't have to wait around too long before you start seeing winning combos come your way. The RTP maxes out at a very average 96.01%, but the special features like the Loaded Reel and Hold & Win bonus game add to the overall winning potential.
There's also the option to buy your way into Loaded Reels and the bonus game, which will set you back up to 500x your stake. Personally, I didn't manage to trigger the bonus game at all, but I did pocket some decent wins via the Loaded Reel. If you do want to use the buy-in feature, just be aware that this is not available to UK players.
The 90s pixelated game graphics are rather fun in Pixel Paws, but they fall a little short of being really impressive. The animal characters are quirky and cute, and you can even change the colour scheme via the paint roller icon to the left of the game board.
However, even with its colourful backdrops and crazy ringtone-like soundtrack, Pixel Paws doesn't really do it for me. I feel like AvatarUX could have taken the 90s theme a bit further with this game, but if you're in the mood for a bit of a trip down memory lane, you may well enjoy this slot.
Overall, I had a pretty good time playing Pixel Paws. As mentioned, I wasn't overly impressed with the looks of this game, but there are a lot of special features here that will keep you entertained. The Loaded Reel is a great touch, and the bonus game definitely kicks things up a notch.
