Some developers are content to churn out the same game again and again but that isn't ELK Studios’ style! They love to push the boundaries and regularly surprise me with their innovative creations. Mine Defender is yet another slot that puts an unbelievable twist on the standard slot mechanics to leave you wondering how on Earth they came up with such an idea.
You probably won't even recognise this as a slot once it gets going! You can pick up regular wins, of course, and these are made up of smaller gems and larger gem symbols. A group of 7 symbols is the minimum requirement and these can land anywhere on the grid.
The smaller gems get wins worth up to 5x for a group of 15 or more and then there are slightly larger ones which can pay up to 20x. The largest gems can pay out up to 100x.
During regular game play, an enemy symbol may land and this causes the game to turn into more of an alien attack computer game rather than a set of reels that offer regular wins. Your standard payouts continue to drop but there is so much more to this as the modifiers enter the fray.
Your hero's job is to defeat the enemies and he can do this by shooting at them or firing some of the special modifiers – such as air strikes, lasers, bombs and the Push Back feature. These all help to destroy the enemies, which can have up to three lives and this means you might need to hit them up to three times.
Your hero has a maximum of three lives but you can add to these with heart symbols and you can also pick up shots and spread shots during play.
If the enemy makes it to the bottom row of the grid, he will attack the hero and potentially kill him, depending on the number of lives he has. Mini Boss symbols are 2x2 in size and have 10 lives but they carry trophy coins, which offer an instant payout once you kill them. If you kill 50 enemies, you get to meet the Final Boss who has 50 lives and holds a far larger trophy coin within. You'll need to batter him to get the cash!
If 3 bonus symbols land, you'll be taken away to play a circular feature game where the hero starts in the centre and enemies make their way in from the outside. You continue to attack them with everything at your disposal as before.
Coins can appear and pay instant prizes and multipliers build up to increase your rewards. Mystery symbols can turn into a number of other symbols and a wild symbol does its regular thing. Once again, you can make it through to the Final Boss where you could pick up a big trophy coin.
There are X-iter options which allow you to improve your chances of hitting a bonus feature by paying 3x and also triggering a hero drop for 10x. If you pay 50x, you start the hero and enemy battle with a maximum of three shots in your magazine. Entering the standard bonus game will cost 100x and this is only available outside the UK. Similarly, 500x can take you to a Maxed Ammo bonus where you get three shots and all of the other ammo you need.
If an enemy symbol enters the grid, the hero will attack him using shots and a number of special weapons. Enemies can have up to three lives and they will attack the hero as they reach the bottom of the grid. You continue to win scatter prizes during the battle mode.
Landing three bonus symbols will take you off to a circular bonus area with the hero at the center and enemies approaching from the outside. The hero needs to keep the enemies from the door and collects prizes as he tries to make it to the final boss.
The regular symbol payouts are pretty decent with some of them paying up to 100x and the flexible scatterpays mechanic working its magic. As the enemies appear, you can look forward to picking up extra wins and watching the game unfold at the same time. You might need to set a few minutes aside for this one as it can take a while to complete. The bonus game feels like a bit of an extension of the battle feature but at least you get to see some more modifiers taking place. Naturally, killing the Final Boss is what you want to achieve but I don't imagine it'll happened too often. If it does, you could be on your way to picking up that 10,000x max win.
I've got no criticisms of the game’s design and not only does it look good but it brings together quite a complicated premise in a very cohesive way. The animation is smooth and the 80s soundtrack is pretty awesome as well. I'm not sure that mobile phone play does it justice but it is still an option.
Pushing boundaries and keeping things fresh is something that ELK does incredibly well and for that, they are one of the best in the business. They put on a fantastic display and always know how to keep slots enthusiasts engaged. There is a huge amount of win potential with the boss symbols attacking the grid and I'm pretty confident that someone will pick up the 10,000x max win before long. Will it be you?
