Defending a country is one thing but being tasked with protecting an entire galaxy is a very different prospect! ELK says that the alien force is relentless in Orbitfall and your job is to make your way through clusters and blockers and fight back against these invaders as you reclaim what's rightfully yours and hopefully a little extra on top.
Get ready for something completely different! In this intergalactic grid slot, you can create wins by landing matching symbols vertically and horizontally with groups of between 5 and 10 symbols producing a win. The lowest payers can get you up to 2x and the other symbols have bigger values worth up to 50x.
Winning symbols disappear and you'll see that the blockers at the top of the game area begin to make way for new symbols to repopulate the grid and the extra places on the blocker row. This effectively takes you to the next level if you're able to clear all the blocker symbols out of the way.
As you move through the levels, you get a better chance of seeing feature symbols. When no more wins occur and a symbol drop has just taken place, you might see an alien attack with a laser removing non-blocker symbols within the chosen columns.
When blockers reveal special symbols, you can get some fun modifiers and one of my favourites is the Extra Drop. This symbol triggers a respin at the end of a round after your wins are added up. The Level Clear symbol removes other blockers and forces them to release their special symbols as well.
A block that holds a multiplier figure will begin to build the global multiplier total. At the bottom of the screen, another laser can appear and remove an entire column and you might also see some wild symbols which substitute as a 1x1 or 2x2 symbol.
Big symbols, which are up to 3x3 in size, can appear and give you an extra chance of landing a winning cluster. As you approach the final level and continue to remove the blockers, you get a respin and each time you don't get a win, the blockers move one step down. If a blocker reaches the bottom, you go back to the first level of the game.
Bonus symbols can appear on the grid and if one of these makes it to the top of the game area, you release 5 free spins. The multiplier and potential redrops that build up throughout the base game head with you into the bonus round. The bonus game is pretty much identical to the base game.
Players outside the UK can go straight to the bonus game by paying 100x and there's also a 500x option if you'd like to see the super feature. If you take on the super game, you start on the final level and there are multiple features ready to make their way onto the grid.
For 3x, you can make each spin four times more likely to trigger a bonus game and 10x will start the game on level two. 75x will whisk you away to the final level.
Blockers hold special symbols and these can all help to increase your win potential. Extra drops respin the reels and you might also build up a global multiplier that is used to calculate your payouts. Some symbols can advance the game to the next level.
Sometimes an alien fires a laser after you terminate a winning sequence. Up to six columns are selected and non-blocker symbols within those columns are removed and new ones take their place. There's also another laser feature that triggers when it's part of a winning combo.
Bonus symbols might make their way to the top of the game area as your wins progress. If this happens, you trigger 5 free spins and you'll take your global multiplier along with you for the ride.
As expected, the wins tend to get bigger and better as you make it through the levels. In the beginning, they are quite small but as lasers appear and you grab some global multiplier figures, things start to improve rapidly. It wasn't unusual to see wins of over 200x occasionally as I played.
The X-iter options allow you to go straight for the good stuff but they are fairly expensive. As usual, the RTP is 94%, so don't expect any record-breaking figures in that respect. The volatility is 7 out of 10.
ELK embraces the 80s space revival with a seamless creation that looks and sounds fantastic. The game area is besieged by an enormous alien and everything plays out like an old-school Space Invaders computer game. I loved watching it evolve on both my laptop and mobile phone.
Orbitfall is a little complicated for newbies but if you've got to grips with everything that the industry has to offer and would like something else to inspire you, then this may well be the solution. Moving through the levels and unleashing modifying powers puts the focus on the base game and doesn't leave you desperately trying to trigger the free spins bonus.
