Land of the Free

Time to get more than just a little offensive slots fans! Nolimit City is pushing the boundaries once again with yet another dig at a certain demographic that resides in the United States of America. Land of the Free will either make you laugh or anger you beyond belief—probably depending on where you come from—but it attempts to make amends with a ton of modifiers and a potential 57,000x win.

Land of the Free Features

You can always rely on Nolimit City to keep things interesting on the feature front. As expected, there are many ways to modify your wins throughout this game and they can all have fantastic consequences for your balance.

Starting with the most basic part of the setup, you have 256 ways to win and that means matching symbols need to land on the leftmost reel first and then the rest on adjacent reels. You'll also be aware that the fifth reel is locked by the American flag until you enter the bonus game. Fairly standard stuff until you take a look towards the bottom of the screen and see that there’s a conveyor belt with a throng of weird and wonderful add-ons.

Modifiers & Bonuses

Up first is the Protein Powder Keg, which might convert a partially stacked symbol in its path into a fully stacked one. The bottles will convert symbols into Wilds and potentially split them in two. A half-stacked bear will convert three symbols into Wilds or scatters and a fully-stacked bear will convert all symbols below water into Wilds during the bonus game.

The nasty-looking Mr Split can appear on the fifth reel when it is unlocked and begin to split regular symbols in two. The chainsaw is active when Mr Split is standing there in his pants on the fifth reel and will add an extra split to the already split positions.

Rubber ducks appear during the bonus game and award an extra two spins while increasing the water level.

Wild symbols and Scatter symbols can also appear to produce the regular wizardry and for between 3 and 5 scatter symbols, you could see up to 20 free spins. These go by the name of Tsunami Spins with the first two rows underwater. If the ducks managed to increase this level and submerge the entire set of reels, then the name changes to Submerged Spins—I'm guessing that the wins become bigger and better at this point.

If a submarine turns up—very random—one of three presidents can appear in the window and you could land yourself the maximum 57,000x prize. Not bad for an instant win!

Land of the Free - Conveyor Belt

Conveyor Belt

Various modifiers turn up on the Conveyor Belt at the bottom of the reels and can help boost your wins. Stacked symbols are added, Wilds appear, symbols are split and spins can be added (during the bonus).

Land of the Free - Free Spins

Free Spins

Between three and five Scatters produce up to 20 free spins with all reels active and the bottom two rows under water—if the next two rows are submerged, the name changes to Submerged Spins and you’ve got a better chance of hitting top wins.

Land of the Free - Titan Spin

Titan Spin

If a submarine turns up at any point you could be in for one helluva surprise. One of three presidents might appear in the window of the sub and award up to 57,000x!

Land of the Free Review

What on Earth can you say about this strange and offensive creation that could see fans chucking their mobile phones at the nearest wall? Some of you are going to love it, but I suspect there will be more than just a few out there who will be writing a strongly worded letter of complaint to this popular slot developer.

Design

You can't knock it from a design point of view and regardless of what you think of the offensive imagery it's all done rather well. We appear to be in a trailer park with the reels set into the back of an RV and the usual high-quality artistic techniques are employed to create various members of this small-town family along with a nice mountain backdrop. I'm going to leave it there so as not to cause any offence and I'll let you decide which parts, if any, you think are the best. Look out for the name on the condom packet—yet another detail that might rile the locals. Oh, and listen out for the music during the bonus game.

Gameplay

The conveyor belt produces all of the modifying action, apart from the horrible Mr Split and rubber duck being absent in the base game, so you'll feel most of the benefits throughout the base game as well—if they show up. There are obviously some benefits for making your way to the bonus game and players outside the UK might decide to head straight in for 68x, 258x or 2,310x. The final option is a simple win/lose spin in the hope that a president appears in a sub—I’ve got to be honest, I’m not a fan of this approach with such a huge buy-in cost.

Win Potential

You can't be angry with a 57,000x max win and a host of modifiers that could get you somewhere close. However, it's the bonus game that will easily produce the biggest wins and this does detract slightly from the fun that you'd be hoping for in the base game. Fair enough, the submarine could turn up at any point, but it still feels a bit like the bonus round takes priority.

My Verdict

Maybe I've been a bit harsh with my critique of bonus buy-ins during this review, but I stand by my words! You can still have a lot of fun with this slot, but I suspect most of it will depend on your thoughts on the theme rather than the gameplay. I'm staying firmly on the fence with this one and it's up to you if you'd like to take Land of the Free out for a spin!
