Well, shiver me timbers! If you’ve grown weary of searching in vain for buried treasure, Gunpowder from Peter & Sons could be for you. This pirate-themed slot has got respins, battling symbols and plenty of opportunities to hit big wins.
The game area is 5x3 in size and has 10 paylines that pay from left to right. If you land a 5-of-a-kind consisting of the game’s 10 to Ace low-pay symbols, you can win up to 5x the stake. The high pays are the different coloured ships - land 5 of the most valuable yellow ship symbols and you’ll win 20x the stake.
Wilds come in the form of a Golden ship, which substitute for all pay symbols, but there’s a little more to them than just that. When they land, they stick to the grid and trigger a respin and they remain in place until the respin is over.
The Phantom Power function can randomly trigger in both the base game and Free Spins. It consists of the Sticky Wild doing battle with other Ship symbols in its immediate vicinity. If the Sticky Wild wins, the defeated ship turns into another Wild and an extra respin is awarded.
Landing 3, 4 or 5 scatters will grant 10, 12 and 15 free spins, respectively. Unlike the base game, Wilds stick to the grid until the end of the round, not just for respins. Also, if you manage to land a Wild on each of the 5 reels, you win an extra 5 free spins. In Free Spins, the Wilds can also carry multipliers of 2x or 3x.
Some players outside the UK can increase their chances of triggering the bonus game by using the Golden Bet function - this increases their stake by 0.5x. It also increases the frequency with which the Wilds fall. Players outside the UK might also be able to buy instant access to Free Spins for 170x the stake.
The game’s advertised as having a highly volatile math model, but I hit some good winning combos much more regularly than I was expecting. Sticky Wilds, Respins and the Phantom Power feature were quite frequent occurrences as well, and they did a good job of spicing up the base game.
The free spins round was a lot of fun, too. The fact that the Wilds stick until the end of the round means that you can end up with some very big returns. Also, winning another 5 free spins didn’t seem that difficult either.
Whenever a Wild lands, it’ll stick to the grid and trigger a respin. If Phantom Power randomly triggers, your Wild will do battle with other nearby ships. If successful, the defeated ship will turn into a Wild itself, and you’ll get another respin.
If you manage to land 3, 4 or 5 scatters, you’ll win 10, 12 and 15 free spins, respectively. Wilds stick to the grid until the end of the round. If you manage to get a Wild on each reel, you win 5 more free spins.
The game’s high volatility is nicely complemented by the decent RTP of 96.23%. Although there are only 10 paylines, high-paying winning combos seemed to fall with fair regularity when I was playing. You probably won’t have to wait around for Free Spins before you see some nice returns. The game’s potentially lucrative features aren’t rare occurrences, either. At 10,000x, the max win isn’t particularly high, but as previously mentioned, when I was playing, winning combos seemed to fall with the regularity you might normally expect from a game with lower volatility.
Behind the 5x3 game area, you’re treated to an angled birdseye view of a bay littered with micromachine-like shipwrecks. When you look at the character designs, you could argue that the developers’ secondary inspiration was Nick Parkian clay stop-motion. The tattooed gun-toting female pirate bears a strong resemblance to Lady Campanula, for example.
Overall, the game looks great. The smooth animations along with the deep and vibrant colours will keep you transfixed. Similarly, the game’s music and sound effects are well-produced and immersive - a dramatic swashbuckling orchestra plays in the background. The game has some interesting features, but thanks to the well-thought-out design, nothing ever gets confusing.
Gunpowder is a buried treasure that’s definitely worth digging up - it’s got a bit of everything. The audiovisuals are charming and the gameplay is engaging in both the base game and in the free spins round. Thanks in part to the well-designed features, there’s plenty of scope for big wins and I’d recommend this one to all slot enthusiasts, regardless of personal taste.
