You know the drill – attach your spurs, saddle up your steed and shoot your way out of this one-horse town while some tumbleweed blows away in the distance. It's another Wild West-theme slot, but is it any better than the rest?
At first glance, there doesn't seem to be much here in the way of tricky mechanics or clever add-ons that might add a little excitement. However, scratch a little deeper and you'll see that there are a couple of clever features that you won't have seen for a while.
Admittedly, it's all about wilds and multipliers with a few expanding reels thrown in but I like the way that this game presents them.
You start with 10 winning lines and across these, you get to hit a number of basic symbols. You start with the royal symbols that have a maximum of 2.5x for a group of five aces and then there are five picture symbols as well. The gunman will get you 50x.
Wild symbols are a little special and each time one lands and forms part of a win, you get an x2 multiplier. Increasing the number of wilds that are involved in each win will increase your payouts as you move from x4 to x8 and then finally, x16 multipliers if four wild symbols take part. It's a simple idea but it can have fantastic effects on your balance.
The Duel feature sneaks into this game unexpectedly and you never know when it's going to pop up. It can randomly trigger during the base game and any symbol that takes part in a win will expand and give you an entire reel of matching symbols. Any other highlighted symbols will also begin to expand in order. Wild symbols can expand more than once if they are included in multiple wins.
Moving on to the bonus game and even though it's a bit of an extension of the base game, you will see a random wild with every spin and also the Duel feature active making any winning combo expand across the reels.
To enter the bonus game you will need three, four or five scatter symbols and the maximum number of spins you receive is 16. Players outside the UK have some options to potentially shorten the time it takes to enter the bonus by increasing their bet by 1.5x, 3x, 5x or 7.5x. Needless to say, the more you pay, the better the chance is of triggering that bonus game.
If you would like to buy your way straight into the free spins bonus, it will cost you 110x and once again, this won't be available in the UK.
As you see, there's nothing too tricky to keep you awake at night but it's interesting enough to keep you on your toes.
I made my way into the bonus game with eight free spins and the constant addition of wild symbols really does make a difference. I saw an entire grid of whiskey bottles on my first spin which produced a 120x payout. Strangely, the only other win I saw throughout the free spins game was on my penultimate spin which paid me 20x. This gave me a total of 140x from the bonus game.
Wids containing a wild symbol will receive an x2 multiplier. It gets even better if you have more wild symbols involved! Two get you an x4 multiplier and three will get you 8x. The maximum is four wilds with an x16 multiplier.
During the base game, any symbol that is part of a win can expand and cover the entire reel. Other highlighted symbols will also expand and improve your chances of hitting a win.
Three, four or five scatter symbols will award 8, 12 or 16 free spins. Throughout this bonus, a wild symbol will always appear on the second, third and fourth reels with each spin and the Duel feature is permanently active.
I saw for myself how the Duel feature managed to spark big wins as the symbols began to expand and completely fill the grid at one point. Admittedly, it only happened once but it shows that it is possible to smash a huge win out of nowhere. That could mean that the 7,500x maximum payout is indeed possible and as you might imagine, the volatility is very high. As seems to be the trend at the moment, the RTP is quite low and it stands at 94.31% in the UK and this may vary in other jurisdictions.
What exactly do you want from a game called The Gunman of Goldwood?! A one-horse town with wooden buildings, a red hue in the sky and some mountains? Well, you've got it! Add to that a wooden frame with some decent enough symbols and a Western soundtrack, and you've got a reasonable-looking slot on a range of devices, including mobiles.
It's a crowded niche out there in the world of Wild West-themed slots and it was going to be a tall order for The Gunman of Goldwood to leave its mark. It does in some ways with the expanding reels and those wild multipliers, but it may not be enough to drag the spotlight away from other games such as Deadwood RIP or Money Train 2.
