Deadwood R.I.P. Review

Coming from the deranged minds of Nolimit City, I have some seriously high hopes for Deadwood R.I.P. The original Deadwood slot came out in 2020, so it’s been a hot minute since we saw our favourite cast of slack-jawed yokels dragging their yellow bellies around town.

With a few extra features thrown in, and the top prize kicked up from 13,950x to a whopping 100,000x, Deadwood R.I.P. looks set to kick its predecessor’s ass in this Wild West duel!

Gameplay & Features

One thing you should know about Nolimit slots is that they always come with a bunch of special features. Sometimes, I feel that there are too many symbols and features packed into one game, but Deadwood R.I.P. stops just short of wedging too much in.

There are just 10 symbols, made up of 5 low-paying letters and numbers, and 5 high-paying gunslingers. There are 384 paylines, which is actually a step down from the original Deadwood slot which has 576.

The game grid is made up of a 4-3-3-3-2 format, and most of the action happens on reels 2, 3 or 4. That said, the last reel holds some special properties. This is where the Gunslinger and Hog Me Tight scatter symbols are present in the main game and Redemption/Salvation spins round.

The xNudge and xSplit Wilds are a familiar sight, having appeared in many a Nolimit City slot. These symbols add an element of excitement to the base game, as they can split one symbol into two and stack.

Bonus Games

There are 2 free spins rounds where you can find multipliers, xNudge Wilds, xNudge and xSplit Wilds, plus those potentially lucrative scatter symbols.

You get to the bonus rounds via Diamondback and Hog Me Tight scatter symbols. Redemption Spins needs 3 Diamondback scatters in the base game to trigger, while Salvation Spins needs 3 Diamondbacks and the Hog Me Tight symbol to appear as well.

Both free spins rounds are quite similar in that the multiplier is increased by xNudge Wilds and stays throughout the feature - but in Salvation Spins you have the addition of the Hog Me Tight symbol that stays on the last reel, acting as both a wild and a symbol splitter.

Deadwood R.I.P. - xNudge Wilds

xNudge Wilds

The xNudge Wild is a wild symbol that nudges to become fully stacked. Each time it nudges, you get a 1x multiplier. In the base game, you can add xNudge Wilds to each other for a total multiplier. In bonus rounds, xNudge Wilds multiply each other to make a bigger multiplier.

Deadwood R.I.P. - xSplit Wilds

xSplit Wilds

Landing 2 Diamondback scatter symbols triggers the Reel Split Wild. It splits itself and other symbols on the reel in half, doubling the symbols on that reel. Reel Split Wilds also appear on reels 2, 3 and 4 only.

Deadwood R.I.P. - Shootout

Shootout

Find 2 Sheriff Badge symbols on reels 2 and 4 to trigger the Shootout feature. In this round, all low-paying symbols in reels 2, 3 and 4 become wild.

Deadwood R.I.P. - Redemption

Redemption

Land 3 Diamondback scatters in the base game to trigger Redemption Free Spins. In this round, the multiplier is increased by xNudge Wilds and stays throughout the feature. Any collected win multiplier is multiplied by other xNudge Wilds.

Deadwood R.I.P. - Salvation Spins

Salvation Spins

Find 3 Diamondbacks plus a Hog Me Tight scatter to go to Salvation Spins. Similar to Redemption Spins, xNudge Wilds stay active all through the round. The last reel keeps the Hog Me Tight symbol active, which is both a wild and a symbol splitter.

Win Potential

With a top prize of 100,000x, plus Nolimit’s usual plethora of special features, it's no surprise that Deadwood R.I.P. is a highly volatile slot. The RTP is 96.09%, which is distinctly average, but with so many chances for free spins and multipliers, you should see some decent wins come your way during both the base game and bonus rounds.

Design

True to form, Nolimit City has gone for a dark and moody design. The symbols are beautifully done, and the Gunslinger characters are just as dead-eyed and cruel-looking as you would expect from these masters of the macabre.

Moving away from the more colourful original slot, Deadwood R.I.P. has a very dark palate that's 90% black and white. This highlights the gold on the Diamondback snake symbol and the red of the various splatters of blood across the reels wonderfully. The backing track is a suitably creepy medley which kicks up a notch once you're in the bonus features.

Our Verdict

Once again, Nolimit City pulls it out of the bag and has produced a slot that stands out against the countless other Wild West releases in the genre. The design and mechanics are a far cry from the original, and it's always great when a software developer doesn't just rehash a popular game and stick the number ‘2’ in the title. There's enough going on in Deadwood R.I.P. to keep you entertained - even if you are waiting around for a while for those big wins to fall into your breeches.
