Gates of Glory Review

Symbols are cascading down from Valhalla! It must be iSoftBet’s new viking slot, Gates of Glory. The game takes place atop an active volcano, and its interesting features include a literal guarantee from Odin himself! Surely it's time for that volcano to erupt.

Gameplay & Features

Gates of Glory is a scatter-pays slot, so to win, all you need to do is land at least 8 matching symbols anywhere on the 6x5 grid. The different coloured gems are the low-pay symbols. Land 12 of the same symbol and you can win up to 8x the bet. Odin’s helmet, axe, hammer and Odin himself are the high pays. A 12-of-a-kind will pocket you up to 25x.

Whenever you hit a winning combination, it will trigger the game’s cascade feature. The symbols of the winning combination disappear, and this allows room for more symbols to drop down, so you can potentially hit more wins. The symbols will keep tumbling until there are no more winning combinations.

Eye of Odin and Free Spins

If you hit a win when an Eye of Odin symbol has fallen, that win will be multiplied by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 25x or even 50x. If more than 1 Eye of Odin symbol falls on the same spin, their values are added together.

Landing 4 Bonus symbols awards 8 free spins. Alternatively, if you land 5 or 6, you win 10 and 12 free spins respectively. The Odin Meter can randomly boost your chances of triggering Free Spins. If the meter is full, it will effectively double the number of scatters: if 2 scatters fall, they count as 4, and so on. Also, If you want to increase your chances of triggering Free Spins, players can click on the Odin Bet function. This increases your bet by 25% but increases odds of triggering Free Spins. The values of the winning combinations stay the same as before Odin Bet was activated.

During Free Spins, if the Eye of Odin symbol lands but doesn’t form part of a win, it will remove the lowest value pay symbol. If you land 3 scatters, you’ll win another 2 spins. If you manage to land 4, you’ll win 4 more. In the event that by the end of the round you end up with less than 10x the bet, you trigger the Odin Guarantee, which grants 4 more free spins.

It’s a scatter-pays slot, so you’re not limited by fixed paylines or adjacent reels etc. That said, the values of standard winning combinations are pretty low, so you’ll need to see some cascades if you want to see some big returns. Thankfully, even though the game’s volatility is high, winning combinations, albeit low-value ones, seem to fall quite regularly. The Odin’s Eye multipliers made quite a few appearances for me, too. They often served to turn forgettable returns into memorable ones.

My Spins

You only need 4 scatters to trigger the free spins round. They didn’t fall particularly frequently when I was playing, mind. I was spinning for a good long while and even had to use the Odin Bet function before I was able to trigger it. The Odin Meter can effectively increase the number of scatters, but it’s completely random, and I wasn’t lucky enough to benefit from it.

Free Spins is more or less the same as the base game. Odin’s Eye symbols seem to be a more frequent occurrence, though, as do the scatters, so it’s not uncommon to win further repsins and have your wins multiplied.

Gates of Glory - Eye of Odin Multipliers

Eye of Odin Multipliers

Players who land an Eye of Odin symbol along with a winning combination will have that win multiplied by between 2x and 50x. In Free Spins, if an Eye of Odin doesn’t land with a win, it will remove the lowest-value pay symbol.

Gates of Glory - Free Spins

Free Spins

Landing 4, 5 or 6 scatters awards 8, 10 and 12 free spins respectively. Increase your chances of doing so by clicking on the Odin Bet if you're outside the UK.

Win Potential

The game’s RTP is 96% and its mathematical model is highly volatile. I guess this is why the values of the standard winning combinations are relatively low, often returning less than your initial bet. Big wins are often down to the cascade feature and or the Eye of Odin symbols.

The Free Spins round came across as quite a rarity, even when using the Odin Bet function. The round is more or less the same as the base game, although scatters seem to fall quite frequently, so there’s a good chance you’ll see some extra free spins. The Odin Guarantee is a nice feature, effectively ensuring that you don’t finish the round with anything less than 10x the stake.

Design

The 6x5 sits on top of a brewing volcano. The background is made up of a sunset, which works nicely with the sparks and heat emanating from the volcanic rock. Overall, the layout is nice and clear, so it’s easy to get to grips with how the game functions.

The 6x5 grid lacks a bit of depth in that there’s not a lot of detail to the artwork and the colour scheme is a little flat. Also, it looks like the designers were going for a bounce effect for when the symbols land, but it just comes across as jerky. This seems a little less obvious when playing on mobile.

The audio is very impressive. The deep, bassy voices of the choir go together really well with the strings and epic orchestral drums.

Our Verdict

iSoftBet’s Gates of Glory has potential. Its high volatility means that you might have to bide your time before you see decent returns. Visually, it could be better, but the epic music really gets the adrenaline going.
