Hacksaw Gaming’s new slot, Evil Eyes, is a horror-themed slot set in a misty graveyard. The game’s wide range of features, however, couldn’t be more inviting. Is it as good as it looks on the surface? Let’s see what we can dig up.
Play takes place on a 5x5 set of reels. To win, you just need to land matching symbols on adjacent reels. The 5 different colourless symbols are the low pays - they’re all worth the same amount and a 5-of-a-kind, for instance, is worth 0.5x the bet. The 5 coloured symbols are the high pays, worth a maximum of 4x.
Keep an eye out for the Evil Eye symbol. If it lands below a symbol that’s part of a winning combination, it’ll trigger an Evil Spread. This consists of the winning combination effectively being scanned and then extended either to the right or straight down to the edge of the reels.
Landing 3 scatters will trigger the Wicked Night round. You’re awarded 3 respins, although those reset every time an Evil Eye symbol falls and collects a bet multiplier, whose values range between 1x and 100x. Those and the odd scatter are the only symbols that fall. Whenever a multiplier is collected, its value is added to its reel. There are also Multiplying Multipliers, which multiply the accumulated multiplier values on the reels and are worth between 2x and 10x. At the end of play, you receive the total accumulated multiplier value on all the reels.
The Epic Drop feature is similar to Wicked Night but you only get 1 spin. It can randomly activate on any base-game spin. You’re guaranteed 3 Evil Eyes and 4 Multipliers.
If you manage to land 4 scatters, you’ll trigger The Graveyard round. You'll have 10 free spins to land as many winning combinations as possible. If an Evil Eye collects a low-pay symbol, that symbol won’t appear on future spins. Landing 2 or 3 extra scatters grants 2 and 4 extra spins respectively.
If you’re playing this game outside the UK, you’ll probably be able to buy bonus features. Wicked Night and The Graveyard, for example, cost 100x and 200x the stake respectively.
There’s a host of features that can be taken advantage of in the base game, so play is always engaging. The Evil Eye and Evil Spread functions came to my aid quite frequently – I personally managed to see a 40x and a 100x win!
Unsurprisingly, the Wicked Night and Graveyard bonus rounds are very difficult to trigger – this is, after all, a highly volatile game. If you are able to trigger either of them, chances are you’re going to see some good returns.
If the Evil Eye symbol lands below a winning symbol, it will highlight the rest of the winning combination and extend it to the right or straight down. The Evil Spread will then extend the winning combination in that direction.
Landing 3 scatters triggers Wicked Night. Use your 3 respins to land Evil Eyes and add multiplier values to their reels. Your respins reset each time an Evil Eye collects. Multipliers are worth up to 100x and multiplying multipliers are worth up to 10x.
4 scatters grant 10 free spins and after a low-pay symbol is part of an Evil Eye spread, it will not appear on future spins. Land 2 or 3 further scatters for an extra 2 and 4 spins respectively.
The game’s RTP is 96.2% and the volatility level is high, so I wasn’t expecting to hit wins as regularly as I did. The standard winning combinations are worth a pretty penny, too. The wide range of base-game features can give players even further big-win opportunities.
The Wicked Night bonus takes the win potential to another level, and you only need 3 scatters to trigger it. That said, scatters don’t exactly fall regularly, so I was a little disappointed by the win potential in The Graveyard free spins round. I felt like I had more opportunities to hit big wins in the easier-to-trigger Wicked Night. The max win is 12,500x.
The setting is a misty graveyard at night and the blue full moon is the only source of light. The artwork and graphics are great - there’s a nice contrast between the Edgar Allan Poe background and the futuristic lighting and animations of the game area. The drum-led music is quite nondescript at first, but if you hit a few wins, it picks up and really gets the adrenaline going. The uptempo thumping trip-hop in Free Spins is a real treat, too. It’s all really well produced, so if you’ve got a decent pair of headphones, use them.
The game’s got loads of features, but the designers have done a good job of making it easy to pick up and play. I played on both desktop and mobile, and I had a really smooth experience on both.
Hacksaw Gaming has once again reminded me why they’re one of my favourite developers. Evil Eyes scores big on all fronts – great presentation, great gameplay, great win potential. I can’t recommend it enough.
