Design

The reels are gilded and covered in gems with two imposing dragon heads either side of them that occasionally sees the eyes shine bright red. Behind the reels (and the Aztec Wheel) are what we assume to be the ruins of an ancient Aztec temple. 

High paying symbols are all common iconography associated with the ancient Aztec Empire. These are orbs, headbands, snakes, masks and golden pyramids. Low paying symbols are your standard card suits, 10, J, Q, K & A.

In terms of sound, players are treated to a low-key Aztec drum beat that you often come across in most of these heavily-themed slots, however when the reels spin it does sound much more like a Vegas classic slot machine, which did get a little bit frustrating whilst playing on autospin.   

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, Aztec Spins is the same as all major Big Time Gaming slots. There are only three major buttons that players need to take note of, the stake button on the bottom left-hand corner of the game screen (that can be set anywhere between 0.10 and 40.00), the autoplay button (that can allow players up to 100 automated spins) situated next to it, and of course the large play button which can be found on the opposite side of the reels. 

Interestingly, the game's Aztec Wheel sits directly behind the reels, as opposed to popping up in a new window as it usually would in most online slot games, something we really enjoyed. 

Win Potential

The only thing that stops Aztec Spins from being a truly fantastic online slot is the win potential. The RTP is slightly below average at 95.71% and the maximum win players can register is only 4,983x their initial stake. 

Ultimately, anyone would be happy with winning nearly 5,000x more than they bet, but considering there were similar games coming out around the same time that allow players to win 50,000x their stake and more it's hard to get too excited.

Our Verdict

Aztec Spins is a beautiful game and we were genuinely impressed with all the features and mechanics that had been packed into this slot, with the lucrative Aztec Wheel feature being our favourite of the bunch. If it wasn't for the slightly below average win potential then we could have been looking at a slot that was pushing a rating of 8 out of 10 or above.
