Wildest Gambit has 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 paylines so, at first glance, this might seem like a standard slot game, but there’s so much more to it than that! With 4 different destinations comes 4 different base games. You start with Chile, India and Peru, and it’s up to you to unlock Egypt as the fourth country. The great thing about this is that you can explore the different countries via the symbol in the top-left of the game board, and you don’t have to wait to ‘complete’ one country before moving on to the next. You can hop around them as much as you wish.
There are 11 regular-paying symbols, starting with 5 letters and then some typical adventurer-style articles, including a compass, backpack and notebook, before moving up to the 3 members of the Wilde family; all of whom carry the same value.
The main difference between the 4 base games is that they each have a unique wild feature. Wilds appear on reels 2, 3, and 4 only and expanding wilds can grow to cover the entire reel. There are also sticky wilds that award respins. If another sticky wild lands on a respin, an extra respin is awarded. But this all depends on which country you’re in, so let’s take a look at each destination in a little more detail.
Rich leads with the multiplier wild feature. His daughter, Cat, supports him with a chance to upgrade to expanding wilds. If Cat triggers an upgrade, multipliers are counted after the expansion.
Cat leads this country with an expanding wild feature. When an expanding wild lands, it expands to cover the whole reel. If you can trigger Gerard’s supporting feature, the expanded wild becomes sticky, and a respin is awarded. New wilds on a respin also expand, become sticky, and award extra respins.
In this location, Gerard leads with the sticky wild feature. Rich upgrades with a chance to add multipliers to the wilds. Sticky wilds trigger respins, and if Rich's feature activates, multipliers are added to wilds for the duration of the respin.
This country is locked at the beginning of the game, and you unlock it by triggering free spins in all of the other 3 countries. Here, Rich leads with the multiplier wild feature, supported by Cat's expansion feature and Gerard's sticky feature.
Finding 3, 4, or 5 Phylactery of Ra scatter symbols in the base games triggers the free spins round with 8 free spins, as well as an instant prize of 5x, 25x, or 125x your stake, respectively.
During this round, one regular-paying symbol is randomly chosen to be the special expanding symbol, which expands after regular wins have been awarded. Personally, I only managed to trigger the free spins round in Peru, and this took me quite some time. I never got to trigger any free spins in the other three locations, so I certainly didn't unlock Egypt in the end.
I managed to bag a few small wins, but nothing earth-shattering. That said, with so many special features and opportunities for free spins and respins, there's no reason that you won't walk away with a decent stack from Wildest Gambit.
Wildest Gambit reminds me of a lot of different adventure films, but the one that stands out most is probably Indiana Jones. The team behind Wildest Gambit has gone above and beyond to create a very adventurous slot game that uses imagery from all the various countries that the Wildes explore.
There's even a fun intro of Rich and Cat hanging from an airplane on a rope while Gerard tries to make a crash landing. The symbols are beautifully animated, and the Phylactery of Ra scatter is particularly vibrant.
Each location comes with its own visuals and soundtrack, and as you skip from country to country, there is even an animation of a plane flying over an old parchment map – very Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade!
Wildest Gambit captures a genuine sense of adventure and camaraderie can be felt throughout the base game and the free spins rounds.
It did take me a while to unlock just one of the free spins rounds, so I think you'll have to play for a long time to unlock that elusive Egyptian final destination. However, whether you win big or small, Wildest Gambit is so enjoyable that I’m sure you'll come back for more, regardless of what you win.
