This isn't your average setup with six reels producing a different amount of rows on each. The first has four symbols, as does the last, and the central four reels have five symbols. Wins are made up of matching symbols landing on adjacent reels and it all starts on the left-hand reel.
A group of three royal symbols will only get you 0.05x your bet but six aces will pay 0.75x. Picture symbols get better results with up to 2.5x available for both the miners and the wild symbols.
Wild symbols have quite a convoluted set of instructions in this game and what you basically need to know is that symbols on the top row that are part of a winning combo will turn into wilds and they can also feature multipliers. If wins are only made up of wild symbols, they only pay if the combo contains six symbols.
Unfortunately, this detail goes against what is stated on the paytable as here it says that groups of three, four, five or six wild symbols will create a payout. Only NetEnt knows the truth!
Extra fun comes in the form of the Wild Zippy feature and this produces six different bombs. A simple bomb will explode after three avalanches while a vertical bomb will explode after 4 and not only explode its own position but those adjacent above and below.
The horizontal bomb is fairly self-explanatory and this explodes after five avalanches and the plus pattern bomb explodes after 6 in a horizontal and vertical direction. The omnidirectional bomb will explode after 7 avalanches and take out symbols in all directions and finally, you have the Max Bomb. This is the most potent of all the explosives as it takes 10 avalanches to ignite but when it does, you'll be walking off with the game's 25,000x max win.
Instead of a traditional bonus game, the developer has gone for added extras that you can purchase for the base game. It's unclear whether these will be available in the UK.
The first will cost you 10x and it means that symbols on the top row that are part of a winning combo will turn into wilds with x2 or x3 values.
The second costs five times that of its counterpart but now the multipliers can reach up to x5. Wilds and Max Bombs are placed randomly on the game area with each spin.
Wild Zippy can release different types of bombs which will each explode and affect symbols in different directions. Wild symbols appear where the bombs once were as exploding symbols disappear and new ones come down onto the reels. If you complete 10 avalanches to ignite the Max Bomb, you pick up the 25,000x top win.
Rather than a bonus game, you can purchase two types of spin features. The first costs 10x and makes symbols in the top row that are part of a win turn into a wild with a multiplier worth up to x3. The second option costs 50x and makes the top row symbols that take part in a winning combo become wild multipliers worth up to 5x. Wilds and Max Bombs are placed randomly at the start of each spin.
The win potential and fun factor are both largely dependent on how often the bombs turn up and in my experience, they were pretty frequent. However, they need to be there when a win takes place and that's part of the problem.
Watching a win and a bomb occur at the same time is one thing but each of the bombs needs multiple avalanches to continue in order to make them worthwhile. The added multiplier values could create a decent win but only if your spins are very fortunate.
This is all part and parcel of playing a game with high volatility but even then, the whole sequence seems quite difficult to achieve. 30x was my best win and this by no means took me back to where my balance started.
The possibility of hitting a 25,000x max win may seem possible thanks to the Max Bomb but I can't imagine that's going to happen too often.
NetEnt creations aren't bad looking but they often fail to get me excited. The same can be said for this slot with its smooth and modern graphics that just feel a little uninspired. The game takes place at the entrance to a mine shaft and some golden nuggets are piled high in one of the carts. It lacks quite a lot of originality and feels like any other gold-digging game with a cartoon vibe.
Removing a standard bonus game was a bold move but did it make Wild Mining XXXtreme better for it? For me, the answer is no as it felt a little like NetEnt is simply trying to get players to spend a little extra to see the more interesting parts of the game.
They're not alone in this approach but at least the majority of other developers will make it possible to enter a bonus game every so often.
The graphics are a little lacklustre, the features are fine when they turn up every so often but the max win feels out of reach. On a plus note, it is a big max win and on paper at least, 25,000x could be waiting for you.
