It didn't take Peter & Sons long to realise that the steampunk genre is an untapped resource that hasn't been overplayed like some others. Still, a few months is quite a short hiatus between nearly identical games so the sequels going to need to produce something a little different to make it stand out.
Despite the max win drop, the game area has received a bit of a boost. It now sits at 5x3 and across these reels, there are 25 paylines.
You can create wins by landing groups of three, four or five matching fruits and other fruit machine staples. The low payers will get you wins up to 5x and from the pictures, the diamonds are worth the most with a 20x reward.
Wins start on the left-hand reel and make their way across to the right. Wild symbols will also jump in and substitute for those mentioned above.
The other symbols you'll see landing with quite a high frequency are the coins and these offer multiplier values of your bet amount. The multiplier figures don't mean a hell of a lot at this stage, but the coins themselves are very useful.
During your base game spins, you can land coin symbols and a collector symbol on the fifth reel. As this happens, the coins are sent into the machine and you'll notice that the number 20 seems to be quite integral to this plot. When you have amassed 20 coins, you’re taken off to play the bonus feature.
The original Steamworks game provided us with a traditional free spins bonus but Peter & Sons has decided that a little change was necessary. What you're working with now is a respins game and you have three lives, or spins if you prefer, in which to land a special symbol. Each time a symbol lands on the grid, it sticks in place and refreshes your three spins.
The special symbols that might land are coins with random values worth between 1x and 20x and big coins, which can pay one of the four jackpot prizes. Of these four rewards, the Grand offering is the best and sits at 1,000x.
You can also pick up collector symbols, which gather in the values of all of those around it and effectively double everything that sits on the screen. The Shockwave will begin to randomly increase the coin values when they land.
For 55x, players outside the UK are able to bypass the base game and head straight to the respins bonus to try their luck.
Collecting 20 coins during the base game is the basic requirement for triggering this bonus feature. Coins with regular cash and jackpot values can land along with collectors and shock waves that increase your payouts. Each special symbol refreshes your 3 respins.
This slot is advertised as having a medium volatility setting, as did the original. However, after blasting my way through several hundred spins I concluded that it felt very high and there were several groups of spins that produced absolutely nothing.
Every so often, I landed wins worth over 30x and that was just in the base game. The bonus payouts felt a little lacklustre as I hit 49x, which wasn't a lot better than the base game but at least you feel like the max 1,000x win is probably achievable at any point of the game.
With such a similar setup, it probably won't surprise you to hear that nothing much has changed in the design department either! The reels have grown a little and this pleases me as the smaller three-reel slots aren't my favourite.
As the game area grew, it seemed like a great opportunity to filter into more features and modifiers but that simply wasn't the case this time around. The steampunk cogs keep turning in the background and the soundtrack is pleasant enough to listen to as you spin the reels. Not exactly a design masterpiece but quite easy on the eye all the same.
Players who prefer to access slots on their mobile phones will also be pleased with the results as everything adapts to the smaller screens quite nicely.
I enjoyed the original outing and had high hopes for the sequel – especially given that the developer didn't want to wait to get back out there and release their second effort. But, as I watched the reels grow and hoped for an increased number of modifiers and heightened tension, I was a little bit disappointed to see that everything had regressed – even beyond the point of the original.
The max win is lower and that doesn't help the situation either but at least you have a respins game and that can feel a little refreshing compared to the standard free spins that you might be used to.
