As is usually the way with Nolimit City slots, it takes a while to figure out the details but when you get there, it's worth the effort. It isn't immediately clear what is happening during the feature rounds, but if you just think of it as Respin Bonus that keeps getting upgraded, then you won't be far off the mark.
Before getting to the features, let's take a look at the regular Base game. There are two different symbol sets to look out for with one special set being reserved for the feature games. What you are working with, for the most part, are 10 symbols increasing in value all the way from the plastic bag up to Billy—one of the main characters who we’ll meet soon. 5 of his symbols landing on consecutive reels will bring you a 7.5 x payout.
Scatter symbols will trigger the first 2 features and only 2 of them are required to get things going. This is where we find Call to Arms. The central 3 reels now play a prominent role in the Respin Feature where you have 2 lives and 2 Jumping Wild symbols. Hilly and Billy now get in their vehicles and try to cross the grid.
If a Wild is struck by a car, your lives remain intact and an extra hit point gets added to the corresponding Collector symbol above. Once this reaches 5, the symbol gets upgraded. Two trips across the grid without striking an animal means the end of the feature.
The 3 Jumping Wilds are Papa Bear, Deer Joe and Fred the Rabbit. Without getting too bogged down by the exact details, the bear can add Multipliers, the deer can split symbols to increase the win ways and the rabbit can produce further Wild symbols.
if an extra scatter symbol lands during Call to Arms, the game is upgraded to Team Assemble. You now get an extra life and the respins continue as before. This gives you a chance to upgrade all of the Jumping Wilds and brings about the Junkyard Assault stage.
During Junkyard Assault, your hearts get armoured, which effectively doubles their value, and you'll see the red car with every spin, which is more frequent than it was in the previous stages.
The final part of the process is achieved by collecting 20 hits on your Jumping Wilds—this triggers the Roadblock. Your lives now get restored and the Wilds cover the rows. This Roadblock is a giant Wild symbol and as the cars hit it, some symbols will split, Wilds get added and Multipliers begin to grow.
2 Scatters award 2 lives and now the cars have a chance of hitting the animals (Jumping Wilds) on the road. Wilds help build wins and when they’re hit enough times, the symbol is upgraded. 2 spins without a hit means game over, but another Scatter means a feature upgrade.
3 Scatters during the base game, or an extra 1 during Call to Arms, triggers this respin feature with 3 lives awarded. Wilds continue to be upgraded when the hit tally maxes out after the cars hit the animals. A full set of upgraded Wilds will upgrade the feature.
When all 3 Jumping Wilds get upgraded, the feature triggers and hearts get an armoured upgrade (a double life). The red car now arrives with every spin instead of every 5th spin as before.
Collect 20 hits during Junkyard Assault and your lives are restored plus Wilds now cover the entire row. As the cars hit the roadblock, you’ll get added Wilds on reel 5, split symbols on reel 5 or an added Multiplier for the entire Wild creating the roadblock.
There's a lot going on in Roadkill but much of it seems to be masked by complicated details, making it all look a lot more involved than it is. If you've got the time and the inclination to get to the bottom of all of this, then it could definitely be worth your while.
The developer hasn't gone for an all-out interactive set and instead, allows you to use your imagination with the reel stuck on a muddy track. As the features get going, you barely notice the cars whizzing across the screen and this seems fair enough as intricate animations probably wouldn't have added much anyway. You get to hear a few crickets chirping during the base game and the main features add some rock music to help build up the tension.
Without the Scatter symbols, the Base game doesn't enjoy a ton of modifiers and added extras to keep you amused. It’s all about the features and even then, you need to keep upgrading them to really see the magic unfold. It's a kind of all-or-nothing game.
To get anywhere near the 11,091x max payout, you'll probably need to go all the way during the Bonus games more than a couple of times. The big Roadblock will certainly help boost your balance, as will that bear with his multiplier action. The RTP is just about right at 96.5% and the volatility has an 8 out of 10 rating.
The fun and frustration appear in equal measures during Roadkill. You get many moments of enjoyment as things progress but without the upgrades and additional stages making their way onto the screen, your balance and concentration levels will suffer. However, hit the spin button at the right time and you'll have a great session and your bankroll might thank you for it.
