Golden Hook Review
After the surprise success of The Incredible Balloon Machine, Crazy Tooth Studios decided it was time for a fishing version of this game with Golden Hook. Combining the popular fishing genre with inspiration from crash games, Golden Hook allows the players to cast out a line and reel in big fish themselves.
There are no reels or paylines with players having to collect the fish prizes instead. Players are literally given a chance to throw out a fishing line and reel it in for big fish wins. It's literally the dream for any fishing slot enthusiast!
Design
When the game opens up, it immediately feels like you are on the open water surrounded by nothing but the sea. There is a first-person view of the slot with the boat's edge and the fishing rod in front of the screen surrounded by fish bobbing in the water.
Whilst the design and animations aren't brilliant in this game, it's easy to appreciate the amount of effort put in by the developers. It definitely feels like you are fishing on a boat - even if it's through a cheap simulation.
The music throughout this slot is quite upbeat with an infectious, lighthearted tone. Of course, the ambient sounds of the ocean and the area add to this tone.
Gameplay
Ultimately, the gameplay in this slot is incredibly easy to pick up. All players need to do is bet, hold down the fishing line and then collect when they are ready - just like any other crash game.
Golden Hook contains most of the menus, such as bet level, to the right of the screen with the spin button in the middle. However, the spin button is not your typical spin button as you hold it down to reel in fish adding to the excitement.
Win Potential
Unsurprisingly, the statistics for this game are similar to The Incredible Balloon Machine which also has a medium volatility level. This is still relevant as players can choose to gain smaller frequent wins or take bigger risks by holding out for larger wins.
The volatility for this game is still quite high at 96.75% which is excellent to know. Finally, the maximum win for this game is 3,082x the stake which is high for a crash game and will very rarely be achieved. The biggest win we found in our gameplay was around 300x the stake and we were very grateful for it.
Our Verdict
Golden Hook is a complete adventure from start to finish. It definitely utilises the best parts of the crash game and combines it with online slots. Whilst the design is not anything special, the gameplay and effort certainly make up for it.
However, it's worth mentioning that the game can start to feel repetitive after an hour or so - but the time before then is absolutely fantastic. For a fishing game that actually lets you reel in fish and wins, give Golden Hook a spin.
