DJ Cat

Lording it over us on the dance floor is DJ Cat as she sits up there in her hovering booth of musical power. Just 1 row presents prizes in this game and the aim is to keep going up and down the ladder as often as possible. It's an odd concept that you're either going to love or loathe but regardless of your personal feelings, 10,000x is still available for some lucky players.

DJ Cat Review

I learnt 2 things whilst playing this game… I now know what anthropomorphism means and that DJ Fox perhaps didn’t need a remake. That said, it's worth taking a look for the outstanding design and max win.

Gameplay & Features

It's hard to know where to start with a game like this as my usual reviewing format kind of goes out the window. There aren't any bonuses to speak of and the setup is extremely limited.

It all starts with 1 row and 4 reels, if you can call them that, and with each spin, you may or may not receive a symbol that pays money or a symbol known as a Dud. The dud is a blank space and does you no good, whilst the record symbols produce a multiplier of your current bet.

The idea is that you win what you see and your bet is divided by 10 for all of the multipliers. If you land 2 of the multipliers consecutively from left to right, you get a prize of two or more digits. I'm not going into any more detail than that because even Rain Man would struggle with the explanations given by Push Gaming.

When an arrow symbol arrives, you get pushed up to the next row and you get a respin. Land another arrow symbol and you move up, but fail to do so and you go back down. VIP symbols and double VIP symbols make their way to the meter to the left of the reels and you get a respin. You get various multipliers for the different rows.

I can't get excited about waiting for 1 reel to expand and potentially bring a multiplier occasionally. It's not my thing, but I get it, other people have different opinions! You aren't waiting for any bonus games so one positive is that UK players have just as much chance of seeing a decent win as anyone else and there's nothing to distract you from what's going on. I played for a while but never managed to reach the fifth row, unfortunately.

Win Potential

It seems incredible that 10,000x is up for grabs in this game as much of the time will be spent on the first couple of rungs of the ladder. However, push yourself up towards the higher rows and the amount you'll win as prevailing record symbols fall does get decidedly better. The RTP is 96.32% and you'll have to deal with high volatility.

Design

Regardless of my feelings about the gameplay, one thing I can concede is that the audiovisual elements are pretty fantastic. Sure, they are similar to the first game but there's something even more vibrant and stirring about this one. I love the odd, retro, hip-hop vibe and there are little touches such as the speaker thumping along to the base that truly stand out. DJ Cat sits in her floating booth in place of her predecessor and the 1-reel setup needs no real explanation. The great thing about a simple setup like this is that it will replicate on your mobile device perfectly, so you can enjoy this design inspiration wherever you may be.

Our Verdict

DJ Cat and DJ Fox are very similar games but the Cat edges it for me with the additional Arrow symbols rather than relying on VIP symbols to do everything. There seems to be more action in this latest version and I went up and down the levels a lot more frequently than I did before. If this is your thing, then I'd advise you go for Cat over Fox.
