If you are new to the world of PopWins, then you might find this setup a little strange. Fortunately, it's easy enough once you've had a moment to get your head around it.
You begin with 5 reels and 3 rows, but this doesn't last for long. Whilst the number of reels doesn't change, the rows will bounce around like nobody's business!
Wins can land from left to right and right to left as long as they start on one of the end reels and winning combos are made up of various symbols. The low-paying symbols are the 4 musical notes and these fetch 1x for a group of 5. Medium value symbols are the drums, guitar and microphone with 1.5x for the biggest batch. High payers are our 3 radical rock stars with 2x for a 5-of-a-kind win and the stars pay 4x for a group of 5. As the reels begin to grow, the star becomes more valuable.
Winning symbols disappear and 2 new ones drop into place. This effectively makes the reel grow and during the base game, it can reach 6 rows high. Not only does this increase the number of winning opportunities but they could grow more lucrative as those stars increase in value.
Stretch the entire grid to 6 rows high and a multiplier begins to grow for any subsequent wins. Once these wins stop, you enter the Free Spins round. It's also worth pointing out that winning those combos that fail to stretch the reels to the max before a losing spin arrives, means that the reels reset and you start again.
Before you begin your 5 guaranteed free spins, you get to spin the Bonus Wheel and see if you can add up to 9 more. The reels will not reset as low as they do in the base game - you progressively build them up as high as possible. They can grow to 8 rows high in the bonus game.
Each time you record a win, the winning symbols double and make the reels grow. You get more chances to win as the paylines grow. Make the reels grow to 6 high across the board and you unleash a multiplier and trigger free spins.

PopWins games are coming at us thick and fast these days and it's no surprise given how popular this mechanic is. It's a bit of a hybrid of other ideas out there and the slot fraternity seems to be lapping it up!
If there is one area of this game that let me down slightly, it’s the design. There's nothing inherently wrong with what’s there, I just feel like far more could have been done to explore the theme. The 80s was a time of pushing the limits and seeing how outrageous you could be with your style, but 80s Pop felt like it was holding back. Regardless, you can still enjoy a great slot session with what you've got and that's also possible on mobile devices as well. The music is fairly familiar but I can't quite put my finger on it. It didn't annoy me at all and I was happy tapping my foot while completing this review.
As exciting as PopWins are, you will need to get through to the bonus game to start seeing the increased payout potential. It's a shame that the multiplier doesn't kick in until you are 6 rows high and are already on your way to the bonus game. Some jurisdictions outside the UK will have a direct buy-in option for 85x and I imagine some players will be tempted. I only managed to trigger the bonus once, so make sure that the PopWins mechanic is sufficient to keep you entertained.
The 20,000x top win came as a pleasant surprise and I'm in no doubt that some players will get close as the stars begin to increase their value and the multiplier works its magic. The RTP is very standard at 96.01%, and the volatility is understandably high.
Even without triggering the bonus game regularly, I still enjoyed my time with 80s Pop. The design wasn't quite up to scratch but the music was decent enough to keep me entertained. The PopWins mechanic is always a fan favourite and that 20,000x max win should draw in quite a crowd.
