The game’s 6x4 game area seems to be located in a dark dystopian future occasionally bathed in neon lighting. Winning combinations come in the form of matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel. Low-paying 10 to ace symbols are all worth the same, and a 6-of-a-kind will win you 0.5x the stake. The high-paying symbols are an array of cartoon animals, which are either dead or are being reanimated. A 6-of-a-kind group of the most valuable snake symbol will win you 2x the bet.
The Expanding Wilds are the game’s cat protagonist. Despite the lack of colour, the game’s visuals are superb. The principally black and grey colour scheme works really well, especially when it contrasts with the occasional blue and or orange neon flashes of the expanding Wilds and other symbols. Solidifying the futuristic aesthetic, a psychotic-looking cat with white eyes and a prosthetic robot limb sits to the right of the grid. Musically, the instrumental trap soundtrack isn’t at all out of place, and it’s actually a good listen, as are the game’s sound effects, whether the symbols form winning combinations or not.
The row-expanding Wilds are a nice variation on the usual reel-expanding Wilds. They also don’t just form part of the most valuable winning combination but of every possible winning combination. I felt like I had more success with these expanding Wilds than I had done with those that cover entire rows. I’m a big fan of the volatility switch, not to mention the fact that the max win is always within reach, even on the normal volatility setting. I found the Bonus Game round a little disappointing in that it’s basically the same as the base game but with expanding Wilds falling more frequently. That said, these rounds can prove to be lucrative, especially if you land more than 3 Scatters to trigger them.
The game’s RTP is 96.35%, but that will vary depending on volatility and buy-in choices. On top of that, there’s a superb 4,096 win ways and a max win of 12,500x. It seems more likely that the top payout will arrive during the Bonus Game thanks to the Expanding Wilds showing their faces more often.
Beam Boys is certainly an enjoyable game and despite the rather basic bonus round, there’s plenty to keep you engaged. The Expanding Wilds seem to fall frequently and can form part of multiple winning combinations.
