It's time to journey to an alternative universe where space exploration did not happen and instead countries raced to uncover the mysteries of the ocean. Published by Microgaming and developed by Alchemy Gaming, Aquanauts is an adventure slot that takes players on an expedition throughout the ocean searching for the unknown and valuable.
In this reality, there is no such thing as astronauts, instead, the explorers of the ocean are called Aquanauts. This game plays on 5-reels with 3,125 paylines and contains Rolling Reels, multipliers, free spins, a bonus wheel and an Upsizer feature. All of these can build up the experience to deliver wins of 50,000x the stake.
Design
There is certainly a retro feel to this slot as the design is very much inspired by the 1960s. The designs of the characters look like they are from 1960s cartoons or advertisements as the animation style looks like it's from another time period. That's not to say that it's outdated but just delivers exactly what the slot wants.
It's clear that with the designs of everything, the developers wanted to go for a B-movie film look from the 1960s and delivers this well. The colours and the style fit in perfectly with this - but some players may find it an eyesore to look at as it's not for everyone.
The music throughout the slot is quite mysterious and magical with soft sounds paired with deep piano noises. It evokes a sense of intrigue and suspense which is what the slot is going for.
Gameplay
Aside from the Upsizer feature, there is nothing overly complicated or unique about this slot. That's not to say that the gameplay is not fantastic but do not expect anything refreshing or new. The Upsizer feature upgrades the free spins round but at a cost. However, this is essentially a bonus buy and is not available in the UK.
Anything the player will need can be found on the right side of the screen with the spin button and the bet level button. Next to the spin button, there is a section highlighting the current multiplier which is good to know.
Win Potential
Aquanauts boasts of an impressive win potential and we can't help but agree. The RTP is above average with 96.26% which is over the average and there is a high volatility level to deliver larger wins but these will be less frequent.
This game also advertises a maximum win of 50,000x the stake which is a crazy high amount for an online slot. Whilst this amount will be difficult to achieve, there is still the potential to get wins this high through the multipliers. Other big wins can also occur during the free spins round as well.
Our Verdict
We were certainly not expecting Aquanauts to be anything good but were pleasantly surprised by what we were given. Not only is the gameplay delightful, but the features and the overall aesthetic is incredible.
This game is nothing new or innovative, but Alchemy Gaming manages to make it feel refreshing at times and we just couldn't get enough of the game. Fans of retro slots or slots with incredible win potentials, look no further than Aquanauts.
