San Quentin 2: Death Row

Nolimit’s previous San Quentin xWays was an absolute riot. The prison-themed slot was a great way to spend your time, but the new San Quentin 2: Death Row takes things to dizzying new heights. The grid is bigger, there are more win ways, and the already massive max win has increased to a criminal 200,000x!

San Quentin 2: Death Row Review

Hardcore slot fans should remember Nolimit City’s original San Quentin xWays from way back in 2021. Well, Nolimit is back with a new and somehow improved instalment. San Quentin 2: Death Row packs in even more prison-based action – the graphics are better, and the win potential is enough to turn a criminal straight.

Gameplay & Features

At a glance, it looks like you’re playing on a standard 5x4 grid. But there is an ‘Enhancer Cell’ above and below each reel. To win, you just need to land matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the 1st reel on the left. A 5-of-a-kind made up of 1 of the more valuable prison character symbols is worth up to 2x the stake. Symbols can be divided into multiple positions, though, so you can easily see more valuable winning combos.

Wilds substitute for all the above pay symbols. If you land a Split Wild, however, you’ll notice that all symbols on that reel have been divided into 2 positions. If you land 1 or 2 Bonus symbols, they will turn into Wilds and open the Enhancer Cells which sit above and below the reel.

Enhancer Cells can reveal pay symbols, Wilds, Razor Split symbols or xWays symbols. Razor Splits turn all symbols on the reel into 2 positions. 2 Razor Splits on the same reel will split the positions twice, and if a Razor Split is applied to a Bonus symbol, the Bonus becomes a Wild and all symbols on the same row are split. xWays symbols expand to cover 5 positions and then reveal the same pay symbol. If there are 2 xWays on the same reel, all 10 positions become Wilds.

Bonus Games

3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols trigger Green Mile Spins and award 1, 2 and 3 Jumping Wilds respectively. You then have the option of gambling 5 of your free spins for a chance to win an extra Jumping Wild. 1 or 2 Jumping Wilds means you’ll start with 3 and 4 active Enhancer Cells respectively. More than that and you’ll start with 5 Enhancer Cells. The 4th and 5th Jumping Wilds start off with multipliers worth 2x. When you reach the 5th Wild, you can choose to gamble 5 of your free spins for a chance to win the 200,000x max win!

When the round starts, 1 pay symbol is given a permanent multiplier. Bonus symbols open closed Enhancer Cells on the same reel before turning into Jumping Wilds. Jumping Wilds move to different positions on each spin. If it lands on a reel with a Razor Split, its multiplier value will double and it’ll split all positions on the same row. Any Jumping Wilds on that same row will see their multiplier value doubled as well. Landing 2 to 5 Bonus symbols at once will award 3 to 6 extra spins respectively.

Bonus Buy Available

Players can double their stake for a guaranteed Bonus symbol on each spin. If you’re outside the UK, you’ll probably have the option to buy access to Green Mile Spins for 100x the stake.

On Nolimit City’s site, it says the game is ‘insanely’ volatile. They weren’t kidding. Given the low values of both the low- and high-pay symbols, you really need to trigger the game's features to see some decent returns. To be fair, that does happen quite often.

Thanks to the Split symbols, a 5-of-a-kind can quickly become a 10. The Enhanced Cells are another great feature, as they also go a long way toward increasing your wins. Standard Wilds appear less frequently, but Bonus symbols turn into Wilds if they don’t count toward a Free Spins trigger.

You’d have thought, given the extremely high volatility, that the free spins round would be a very rare occurrence. I did have the privilege of triggering it, however. There’s a lot going on, so it’s highly engaging and lots of fun. I also like how you can gamble your spins for a chance of winning more Jumping Wilds.

San Quentin 2: Death Row - Enhancer Cells

Enhancer Cells

When triggered, Enhancer Cells will reveal a pay, Wild, Razor Split or XWays symbol. Razor Splits divide all symbols into double positions. xWays symbols cover 5 positions and reveal the same pay symbol.

San Quentin 2: Death Row - Green Mile Spins

Green Mile Spins

3, 4 or 5 scatters grant 5 free spins plus 1, 2 and 3 Jumping Wilds respectively. Choose whether you want to gamble 5 of your free spins for a chance to win more Jumping Wilds. The more Jumping Wilds you have, the more permanently unlocked Enhancer Cells you’ll have.

San Quentin 2: Death Row - Split Wilds

Split Wilds

Split Wilds turn all symbols on the same reel into double positions. Inactive Bonus symbols become Wilds. If combined with a Razor Split, all positions on the same row will double.

Win Potential

The standard number of win ways is 1,024, but that can greatly increase thanks to all the features that split positions on the grid. The odds of hitting the astounding 200,000x max win are apparently 1 in 1.5 million, which isn’t bad.

You’ll certainly notice the potential in the free spins round. That’s when the already frequently active features go into overdrive, so you could potentially see lots of chances to win big.

Design

The setting is the back end of a prison-bound bus as it drives toward the infamous San Quentin. It’s flanked by high barbed-wire fences. In the distance, we can see manned watch towers and CCTV cameras.

The artwork, graphics and animations are all superb, regardless of whether you play on mobile or desktop. This is a complex game with lots of features, so things can get a little confusing, mind. The electric guitar-infused trip-hop/breakbeat soundtrack sounds like it was put together by DJ Shadow. I could listen to it all day.

Audiovisually, the game is a masterpiece.

Our Verdict

Nolimit City has done it yet again. The complex special features might be a little difficult to get your head around at first, but trust me, it’s worth it. San Quentin 2: Death Row is one of the most fun and engaging slots I’ve played in a long time.
