Rocky’s Gold Ultraways Review
Northern Lights Gaming has made this slot entertaining and to some extent interactive as well. You get to have a little say over how many free spins and multipliers you can achieve during the bonus round.
It also has the option of buying your way in straight away if you don't live in the UK. The UltraWays setup makes the base game more interesting than most. Having symbols turn up in double and quadruple format creates millions of possibilities so no 2 spins are ever the same.
Design
Rocky's Gold Ultraways definitely has the fun factor going on. The scene is a typical gold rush mountain backdrop with a little hut in the corner. There are also various tools lying around that presumably help Rocky in his quest to unearth hidden treasures.
It's bold and colourful and all of the animated elements are light-hearted. It has a kind of cartoon feel and we also like the tumbleweed floating across the screen as it waits for you to hit the spin button.
The pace steps up a notch as you enter the free spins round and you even get treated to a version of Spandau Ballet’s gold played on the banjo. It's worth triggering the feature around just to listen to this. And we have to admit that we bought our way in far too many times just to satisfy our own weird desire to hear it play again.
Gameplay
The Ultraways format does take a moment to get your head around and make sense of the multiple symbols. The only thing you need to remember is that wins are created by symbols landing on adjacent reels rather than in a specific win line.
So having quadruple symbols instead of a single symbol creates an almost endless selection of winning ways. If all of the symbols were to fall as quadruples, then a massive 60 million win ways would be possible.
The game controls are fairly standard. You can change the bet amount at the bottom of the screen with the simple plus and minus options. And there are also some basic settings to toggle the sound on and off as well as use the turbo mode if you'd prefer to fire things up even quicker. There is an auto spin option. Again, this is only available outside the UK.
Win Potential
There isn't a fixed jackpot on Rocky's Gold Ultraways. However, it does present an enormous maximum payout of 11,500x your stake. Very high volatility means that you won't be seeing regular wins during this game.
It is far more likely to throw out an enormous payout every so often for a few lucky players. Unfortunately, this does mean that your balance will be under the cosh while you're waiting for the big one to arrive. The RTP is set at 96.12%, so this is perfectly in line with the industry average.
Our Verdict
The game producer has gone all out to create massive payout potential but this comes at a cost. The game is fun and enjoyable and lower volatility would have made it even better in our opinion. But there are many other slot options out there for those looking for regular payouts rather than huge prizes so we can't come down on them too heavily for that.
The bonus game doesn't produce as many free spins as some of its competitors in this niche. But again, that can go hand in hand with the high volatility sometimes. The wagering options are also pretty attractive running from just 0.20 to 50. So this presents more than enough variation to suit all kinds of budgets.
