I've gone this long without needing a lootline in my life but before I even take a look at this mechanic, I just know I'm going to need it in my world from now on! Let's take a look and see how tribute symbols use their dynamic multiplying power to award cash prizes along these lootlines and hopefully watch our balances grow out of control.
Despite the fancy feature promises, you're still working with a pretty basic grid that is 5x5 in size. Along this game area, you have 19 paylines and to grab a win, you're going to need a group of at least three matching symbols.
The lowest paying symbols are the royals and they quite rightly offer smaller wins than the picture symbols. The five-of-a-kind values are pretty decent at 2.5x and even a four-of-a-kind win with any of the royal symbols will return your stake. The picture symbols will do you the most favours with the top-paying eagle able to create a win worth 10x.
The standard symbol payouts are pretty respectable but we're going to need a little assistance if we want to see those multipliers grow beyond control. Thanks to the tribute symbols and lootlines, we could see that happening pretty soon. The tribute symbols are multipliers that represent a cash prize and the overall value of these symbols is added together to create a final win. The cash multipliers must line up along a lootline. It's basically a winning payline of tribute symbols with a fancy name.
Some tribute symbols will pay multiplier values up to 10x and others will reveal an adding multiplier figure worth up to 500x. Multiplying tribute symbols grab you up to x5 and a revealing symbol pays up to x25.
The Path to Power is your standard bonus game offering and this occurs when three scatter symbols land at the same time during the base game. For this achievement, you received 10 free spins and you'll watch the base game mechanics continue throughout the future. You have an increased chance of landing more tribute symbols with higher values and if you can stop some FS symbols on the reels while you play for free, you can pick up extra free spins.
This is Rome is the name of the more advanced free spins game and you'll be playing this if you see four FS scatter symbols appear at the same time. Once again, you get 10 free spins and all of the base game magic continues along with the heightened chance of landing tribute symbols. In addition, non-winning tribute symbols that appear during the same spin as another tribute symbol are added to a meter at the bottom of the grid and once you have all five filled with a tribute, their values are rewarded and you pick up a special prize.
Not known for leaving you hanging, Hacksaw decided to chuck in a hidden epic bonus known as Fight for Glory. This version isn't quite so hidden as you only need five FS scatter symbols to trigger it and yet again, you have 10 free spins. It's basically a repetition of the above two features but you don't need five in the meter once you've collected the non-winning tribute symbols in order to watch the values appear in your balance.
The feature purchase options are plentiful and the first one will cost you 3x to make each spin five times more likely to trigger a bonus game. The 50x options are a chance to see three winning tribute symbols or three tribute symbols along with one revealing tribute symbol. 100x will carve your path to 10 free spins and 200x will ignite the medium range bonus that you usually need four scatter symbols to trigger. Some of these options are only available outside the UK.
This game makes use of lootlines which are winning lines reserved for tribute symbols only. If you land a standard win but using the tribute symbols, then you pick up values that are multiplied by your bet total. Basic symbols are worth up to 10x and then there are others that can pay up to 500x. Multipliers get added together to create your final reward.
Three, four or five free spin symbols fetch you 10 free spins and the most basic game gets you an extension of the base game but with a better chance of hitting more valuable tribute symbols. The medium game does the same but allows you to collect five non-winning tribute symbols before you walk away with their values and the final version doesn't require five non-winning tributes to be collected – 1 will do!
Despite their best efforts, the tribute symbols and lootlines didn't really get this Roman party started and my warriors were left flapping around in an anticlimactic fashion. You need to make it through to the bonus game if you want to pick up the big wins and obviously the more scatter symbols, the better. I didn't find win potential in abundance and I think players will struggle to get anywhere close to the 15,000 max win.
The design team over at Hacksaw hasn't gone crazy with this creation and apart from a fairly attractive set of reels, you don't get much to focus on. Admittedly, there are a couple of huge Roman centurions to the side of the screen but they don't really offer any benefits to your game. The background is a fiery and bloody battlefield and the soundtrack is more focused on the battle sound effects rather than a catchy tune.
Reign of Rome does its best to offer multipliers in a different format but the lootlines and tribute symbols are essentially rehashing something we've seen time and time again. I'm pretty sure I said this the last few times I evaluated a Hacksaw game. It's a nice enough creation but nothing to get excited about.
You might see some big wins here and there thanks to the high volatility and if you can get into one of the latter bonus game stages, those unused tribute symbols could display a very welcome surprise.
