Creating a winning combination is reliant on the scatter pays mechanic. 8 or more matching symbols are required to trigger a payout anywhere on the grid and they come courtesy of royal symbols and 6 picture symbols. The royals top out at 1x whilst the pictures may produce 50x for a matching group of 12 or more lions.
Wild symbols can also enhance your wins by jumping in and substituting for other regular paying symbols. As wins occur, the winning symbols disappear and the multiplier begins to grow. You'll see the figure sliding upwards at the bottom of the screen.
Other multipliers may add to this figure when they come as an overlay on top of a regular paying symbol. As soon as a sequence of wins finishes, the multiplier plummets back to 1x.
Despite the high volatility, I saw a lot of wins, but they weren't always on par with my bet size. This is down to the high hit rate that produces a decent amount of action but doesn't necessarily translate into profit.
The bonus game is a fairly standard affair with up to 25 free spins available when you land between 3 and 6 Scatter symbols. You're multiplier figure continues with you into the free spins game to help boost your wins right from the start. Unlike during the base game, multipliers do not reset.
One of my favourite aspects of this bonus game is the Wild Explosion feature, which causes Wild symbols to spontaneously combust if they are not part of a winning combination. As they explode, they take out all other symbols in a horizontal and vertical line to create a cascade. New symbols drop into place and you could see a win as a result.
For some players outside the UK, there are 3 purchase options with the first being the Bonus Boost at 1.4x - this makes each spin twice as likely to trigger the bonus. The Bonus Boost Plus makes each spin 5 times more likely to trigger the game and costs 2.5x. Party Mode will set you back 5x but guarantees at least 2 cascades, or avalanches if you prefer, and is 4 times more likely to trigger the bonus game.
After activating Party Mode for a while, I witnessed the bonus round light up and received 10 free spins. I finished up with slightly less than the cost of the spins that combined to take me into the round, which was disappointing but nothing too drastic. Back in the base game, I managed to push my balance just above where I started so I walked away happy enough.

I walked away slightly up from where I started and this was mainly down to the multiplier working its magic during the base game - strangely. The bonus free spins didn't do much to help the situation, so not at all what I was expecting. High-volatility games like this will attack your balance before suddenly landing you with decent wins, so be prepared. My main issue with King of the Party is the 94.32% RTP, which feels like a bit of an insult these days considering there's no jackpot prize at stake. The max win is 5,000x.
Imagine a lion dressed up as a DJ playing some slow techno house in a crowded club full of animals. Then, suspend a 6x5 grid from the ceiling and you’ve got a good idea of how King of the Party looks and feels. There’s some decent animation going on beyond the bobbing animal heads listening to their favourite DJ - you also get a bit of a light show and a few fireworks when a win hits. It’s a little more subtle on a smaller, mobile device but the game plays perfectly well all the same.
