Chomplings does have a slight hint of Pirots about it but there are some distinct differences which keeps it feeling fresh and individual. It's by no means a copycat. The four characters should keep you entertained for the foreseeable and if Gemma can upgrade those gems while her pals do some damage, you could see those big wins begin to build up.
It's hard to know what to expect when this game first appears on your screen. You can see an 8x8 grid covered with seemingly insignificant symbols and perhaps a couple of special symbols dotted around.
Our four protagonists wait impatiently for you to hit the spin button and as soon as you do, they begin to chomp! Similar in some ways to a game of Pac-Man, these characters consume whatever they can until they hit a wall. The big difference is that you can't move them in another direction and the game is controlled internally by its own mechanics.
Occasionally, these four characters might decide to bust down a wall in front of them and let them head off to the next part where they can collect more symbols. Beyond that, each of the characters has a special power and this could keep you in the game for longer.
To the bottom of the game area, you'll see a prize meter. This is essentially a target that you need to meet before you win that prize. These targets are multipliers of your bet amount and if you reach the target, you pick up a reward. Wins range from 0.1x to 100x.
The symbols that can be consumed are generally made up of gems, which come in six varieties. They can be regular or premium and each one will help fill the progress bar a little faster or slower, depending on how significant it is.
You'll also see some multiplier rocks, which help increase your win multiplier by up to 100x. Eggs can hatch up to four more Chompling characters and a wormhole will allow them to move from one place to another and avoid the walls. Instant prizes can also offer up to 100x.
If you clear a grid, you move on to another one and the process begins again with slightly more enhanced symbols populating the new game area.
Wingrid, Rocky, Zuck and Gemma each have a power to help them enhance your payouts and grab a little extra to eat. These insatiable appetites are aided by the power of flight and others along the way.
Wingrid will build up the ability to flutter away to a different part of the grid and begin consuming gems in that area. Rocky will smash down any wall that he comes across and Zuck can snort gems from different places on the grid! Gemma is an important character as she can upgrade all of the gems around and when they are consumed, they get you better payouts.
Ordinarily, these Chomplings won't just start utilizing their special powers on their own. You need them to start eating each other to bring these powers to the forefront and offer you the benefits.
There are three Feature Bet options and the smallest will cost you 4x. For this price, you activate a guaranteed win. The second option is the Big Bite and for 100x you can activate more features. Finally, pay 300x and you'll activate a guaranteed win, play with premium gems and witness more features.
Each of the character symbols has a designated modifier which can assist in your quest to pick up that max win. You'll either watch them bust down the walls, upgrade the symbol values, fly to a different area or simply suck gems from one part to another!
Each grid is different to the next with walls placed in distinct zones. If your Chomplings manage to eat all of the gems and clear the grid, you move on to another area with upgraded gem values.
Even on my first spin, I witnessed the game growing out of control and you need to put a few minutes aside if you're interested in watching everything unfold. My characters munched their way through three or four grids and as they did so, the wins grew to nearly 50x.
It's going to take a lot of favourable spins to offer many decent payouts like this to get anywhere close to the 20,000 max win though – I don't see it all happening at once because it would take a lifetime to complete.
Still, the potential is there and with high volatility, you never know. The downside is that you might see some bad spins and your balance won't be happy if this happens.
As usual, Print Studios has smashed it out of the park with the design setup. Each of the grids is set on a floating platform, which gives everything a perfect alien feel. The little characters are cute, their movements are smooth and this is evident across larger screens and smaller mobile devices as well. The music's fantastic and the low-saturated colour palette is unmistakably ‘Print’.
The only part that I don't understand about Chomplings is why all characters can randomly bash through a wall without needing to eat each other first. It begs the question as to why Rocky has a superpower. Either way, I'm not complaining as it helps enhance the gameplay and the win potential, which this game has in abundance.
