With each new Nolimit slot release, I tend to wince and look through my fingers at the screen. What are they going to produce now? Tanked is the latest creation and it follows a fairly unique mechanic that I've only seen employed by ELK previously. It's an exciting way to add modifiers to the battle area and I'm sure there'll be some comical add-ons here and there.
It all begins with a fairly random-looking grid with six rows made up of coloured gems and odd-looking characters on miniature tanks. This is a Nolimit City production, so let's not get too hung up on the details for just a moment.
Let it all wash over you and hit the spin button as you work out that these little warriors are trying to collect gems of the same colour. They need to be next to the man in a tank who bears the same coloured hat and the trail of gems must be uninterrupted for him to continue collecting them. Blue and turquoise gems are worth 0.5x each, green ones get you 0.10x each and red gems pay 0.15x.
Tanks can also pick up multipliers and these are applied to any payouts created as you play. Various boosters come along to assist you during the battle and these are rockets, grenades, drills and airstrikes. The rockets shoot the walls close to one of the other characters and increase the size of the grid. Grenades explode symbols near an enemy position while the drill sends one of the characters off to the largest cluster available. If anyone's hit by one of the tank boosters, they lose a life.
Bombs and barrel bombs also create explosions that remove symbols and these will also expand the grid up or down. There are two booms to look forward to – the small one explodes to remove paying symbols while the big one explodes and also increases the grid size.
Losing lives is important for these little soldiers as they are removed after being killed three times and can trigger Mayhem Spins if they all lose their three lives and die during the same explosion.
This is the most advanced of the free spins bonuses and you play with a 9x9 grid and a +10 multiplier. You can retrigger these free spins if all of the characters die at once again.
For everybody else, you'll have to make your way to Carnage Spins or Carnage Royale.
Outside the UK, players can pay 100x or 300x to ignite these standard bonus games and 500x will unlock the Mayhem Spins.
Within the UK, however, you need three or four bonus symbols to begin your free spins. The difference between the two standard games is that you get a bigger multiplier and larger grid in the Carnage Royale bonus.
Four tank boosters can improve your wins by exploding various sections of the grid and picking up winning symbols that move into the correct position. Barrels, bombs and booms will also produce similar results.
The grid can expand when bombs and rockets join the party and can reach 9x9 in size. Symbols can split to create extra winnings thanks to the split symbol and the nudge symbol can increase the multiplier.
3 bonus symbols get you 5 Carnage Spins with multipliers, kill count and grid size going with you. Four bonus symbols trigger 7 Carnage Royale spins on a larger grid and a +5 multiplier. Mayhem Spins arrive when all characters lose their lives and you’ll have a +10 multiplier.
The key to big wins is watching these modifiers trigger in tandem. It doesn't necessarily have to take place in the bonus game, but at least you're not paying for the privilege. Expanding the grid is an advantage, so the top two bonuses are worth aiming for as you pick up extra multipliers and more symbols together along the way.
x10 and x20 payouts weren’t out of the question during my spins and that was just during the base game. I managed to pick up well over 500x in the standard bonus game as well. As you can imagine, there's some extremely high volatility going on, so keep an eye on your balance as you play. The RTP is 96.04%.
Even though the game area lacks a little originality and bears a resemblance to Elk's Pirots slot, Nolimit has managed to keep things feeling different thanks to some clever imagery and sound effects.
You're pretty much landing wins in the middle of a war zone and these little characters move around the grid on their mini-tanks to pick up the bucks. It's easy enough to make out on smaller mobile screens as well, so everyone can get involved.
The great thing about this mechanic is that while it has been borrowed, it hasn't been overdone in the slightest. Other developers may think about jumping on board in the future but for now at least, we have a little exclusivity involved.
If you like over-the-top modifiers and a huge max win, then Tanked probably pips Pirots. But if you're not looking for something quite so volatile and want to see your balance stretch further, then you might want to head towards ELK.
