Slot purists need not go any further as there is nothing vaguely regular about this game. You don't have any reels or paylines but instead, you're battling your way through five levels in a pyramid that holds the key to a 25,900x max payout.
Rather unsurprisingly, it all begins on level one where seven places are filled with monetary values. If three of these are the same, then you move to level two. This level now contains an x2 multiplier that is applied to any additional symbols that match the three winning symbols from level 1.
If you land yet another three matching symbols of the same variety, then you will progress to level 3 where an x5 multiplier awaits. The same goes for level four where an x10 multiplier is applied and finally, level 5 offers an x50 multiplier for any additional symbols. Land three matching symbols on that final level and you are awarded an instant 5,000x multiplier.
Anything beyond level 3 could unleash the 7 Prize Bonus and it only requires one Bonus symbol to arrive. It is beneficial to have more than one Bonus symbol, however, as this will multiply your payout in the Bonus game. Quite simply, you’re awarded seven prizes and that's about it.
Landing 3 matching prizes unlocks the next level where an additional multiplier awaits. Further matching prizes add to your payout but you’ll need another group of 3 to keep pushing you up towards the 5,000x.
Make it to level 3 and a Bonus symbol can trigger this feature. You’re awarded 7 random prizes with each worth up to 100x, but if you entered with more than one Bonus symbol, this figure gets multiplied by x1.
It may take you a few moments to get your head around the setup in Astros but the simplicity soon shines through and this will either please you or leave you wanting a change. Personally, my favourite types of slots don't grow from the bottom upwards but I understand why this may appeal to some fans. It’s different and that’s ok!
Astros presents a fiery and dramatic setting with various pyramids decorating the background. Our structure sits front and centre with the ever-decreasing level sizes making their way to the 5,000x payout at the top. The soundtrack is a little reminiscent of that of Sunshine from nearly 20 years ago but is naturally interspersed with some stereotypical Egyptian music.
It's quite tough to review the gameplay in a slot like Astros as it is going to be very divisive. Some players will love the challenge of something a little different while others simply won't get the intricacies behind the scenes and they'll move on to the next title very quickly. For me, too much time is spent on the bottom two levels and this made the whole process feel very repetitive. I didn't manage to trigger the bonus after an extended period of play but hopefully, you'll have better luck. The Bonus game with its basic offering of ‘here are your seven prizes, now get out’’ also seems a little anticlimactic.
The 5,000x multiplier keeps you alert and knowing that this isn't even the top payout for this game also adds a little extra spice—25,900x is possible. Regardless of what you think of the gameplay, there are big wins available here for some lucky players. Expect high volatility and differing RTP levels, depending on where you play. The version I played only came in at 91.7% but I understand that higher figures are available.
I am a tough audience for games like this and I'm yet to find one that follows this type of mechanic that really puts a smile on my face. I appreciate the idea but I don't think it was executed perfectly in Astros with too much time spent languishing at the bottom of the pyramid and not enough action to keep me satisfied.
