What's so zappy about this lab? That's a good question and all will become clear in good time. Watch as Zappy symbols run amok and play havoc with your grid and if he attacks Dr Mayhem enough, you might see some big payouts that are scientifically proven to put a smile on your face.
Whenever there's a meter involved, you know that some special features could be about to erupt and that’s certainly the case in ZapLab. You won't be whisked off to a bonus round anytime soon and you could see that as a good thing because you can witness everything during the base game.
You begin this adventure on the 7x7 grid and choose your bet total between 0.20 and 100. There are no paylines and instead, you have cluster pays to consider.
Winning symbols are a strange array of shapes and characters, with the four smaller shapes paying up to 50x for a group of 25 or more matching symbols that join in a horizontal or vertical fashion. The orange character symbol can pay up to 1000x.
It can be quite difficult to land a one-off huge group of matching symbols but there are a few extras here to help out. The first is a wild symbol that might explode and replace all payout symbols within an ‘X’ with a randomly selected symbol or it could twirl randomly and create more matching symbols while removing other payout symbols. Symbols can also be upgraded by the wild or they can simply be substituted.
The Monster Meter is an integral part of this creation and each time you land a win, you'll help add to it. Winning symbols disappear and the meter begins to grow, depending on the number of winning symbols that made up the payout group.
Each time you fill the meter, you unleash one of the features. The first is a Monster Reload and this will award a simple redrop where new symbols join the grid. The second is a Wild Flip, which chooses a random symbol and replaces it with wilds. Up next is Monster Chunks and this chooses a random number of symbols to replace them with 2x2 symbols. Finally, you have a chance to see Dr Mayhem symbols drop by and get zapped by Zappy!
Zappy symbols act as a wild and in this respect, they simply substitute for other regular payers. But, as we've just seen, Dr Mayhem will be on the receiving end of this flexible fireball. As he attacks Dr Mayhem symbols off the grid, it increases the multiplier and potentially expands his own symbol up to 4x4 in size.
Once you've completed the meter five times in a row, you release what's known as a Shockwave and you experience all five of the special modifiers during the same sequence.
You can more than triple your chances of triggering a Shockwave by paying 3x the standard stake amount and for 5x, you get a guaranteed Zappy symbol. 25x starts one of the features from the Monster Meter and 100x guarantees the activation of a Shockwave. 500x guarantees a drop of 5x5 symbols and triggers the Shockwave.
Each time you land a win, the collected symbols will begin to fill the Monster Meter. When the meter is full, you'll grab a random feature. You could have symbol redrops, replaced symbols, larger symbols or watch Dr Mayhem symbols join the game. Fill the meter five times and you'll get all the features at once!
Zappy is one of the wild symbols but he does far more than simply substitute for other regular payout symbols. He might attack Dr Mayhem symbols and increase the multiplier too! The symbol can expand up to 4x4 in size during the final Zap Attack.
There's no doubt about it, this enormous grid full of fun features has more than just a smidgen of win potential about it. If you see a long run of spins and unleash those modifiers, it's not unreasonable to think that your balance could grow substantially and I'm sure some players will reach the 10,000x max win quite quickly. It's all about the build up and this slot has it in abundance. High volatility will be cruel to some but extremely pleasing to others – it all depends on when you get your finger on this spin button. The RTP is as disappointingly low as it always is with ELK games at 94%.
I'm not sure if this crazy creation is taking place here on Earth or some unknown alien peninsula floating around out there in another galaxy. The martian symbols would suggest the latter but Dr Mayhem does share some human-like qualities. It's a huge 7x7 grid and you couldn't ask for more vibrant colours and a detailed background to boot.
The Monster Meter is a simple creation on the face of it and it sits to the left-hand side of the reels. You can see the moon shining outside the window and the soundtrack pulls the atmosphere together quite nicely on both desktop and mobile devices.
Sometimes it's nice to see a game without a separate bonus feature, especially for players in the UK who don't have the option to buy their way directly to the feature round. However, it does take a decent run of spins to see anything interesting and ELK has made it possible for direct buy ins to witness those parts of the show. It's a conundrum for UK slot fans but I think there's enough going on here to warrant a few spins.
