Here's a slot concept I've not come across before! Like me, you've probably never thought much about how national electricity contracts are won and lost. Play’n GO has an idea and it seems that it's all based around a steampunk-inspired stage show where big wins and fun features will send one of our scientists on a winning path to glory. I'm more than happy to tag along for the ride if it gets me close to that 10,000x max win.
You don't land winning combos as such in this game; instead, you must create closed circuits. Closed circuits allow the electricity to pass through uninterrupted and they come as two-path, three-path or four-path circuits.
Circuits represent wins of between 0.3x and 300x, depending on how many arrive. You'll need 4 or more closed circuit symbols to create your payout and these disappear to allow more circuits to drop in and play.
To the top of the screen, you'll see the meter for both of our competitors and as the circuits begin to build up, you approach the first mark to release a modifier.
On the orange side, or manifest as it is known, your first modifier is Relay and this randomly removes up to 11 symbols to create a cascade. When you've approached 25 circuits, you release Overload and now Destroy symbols arrive on the grid. Again, random symbols disappear and new ones come in. For 35 winning circuits, you get an Empire Energy Spin with multipliers of up to 20x.
Over on the right-hand side, or Resonant side, the features arrive at the same levels as before but this time they go by the name of Gyrota, Dynamo and Free Energy Spin. The first rotates existing symbols, Dynamo ads a special four-way circuit symbol and Free Energy Spin is the free spin with up to 20x multiplier.
A minimum of 4 closed circuits gets you a payout of anything between 0.3x and 300x. Winning symbols disappear and the new ones continue to build your win and release features.
Features are available after 15, 25 and 35 winning combos. Relay, Overload and Empire Energy Spin boost your wins by removing non-winning circuits, destroying circuits and offering a free spin with multipliers.
Again, 15, 25 and 35 winning combos are necessary to release the modifying powers. Symbols might rotate to create closed circuits, 4-way symbols could appear or a free spin with a multiplier worth up to 20x.
The winning symbols don't present particularly large payouts and that's because you can increase them exponentially as new wins drop in during the cascade feature. Modifiers also help boost things along nicely. You could end up with a maximum 10,000x win in this game if you have a decent run of spins. The RTP varies with the maximum at 96.30%, and there is some discussion about the volatility level ranging anywhere between medium and high - we don't have the official word just yet.
You get a fun VIctorian-English introduction as the rules for the energy contract competition become clear and then you get a picture of the Eiffel Tower and our main protagonist speaks in an American accent. This isn't the first time that Play’n GO has added a mishmash of concepts together without any real cohesion. Regardless, it is a fun idea as you enter the game proper. The electrically-charged grid is very easy on the eye and the same can be said whilst playing on mobile devices as well.
Not everybody’s going to love Spark of Genius but I imagine there will be some enthusiasts out there. I was quite indifferent to the idea, but I appreciate it when a developer tries something a little ‘out there’.
