It’s not magic, it’s Stakelogic. The intrepid developers are back with a cartoony fantasy-themed slot that looks like it might not be half bad. Snowflake Sorcery isn’t exactly packed with features but it has a couple of interesting twists on some classic ones.
The action takes place on a 5x5 game area that has 20 paylines. To win, players need to land matching symbols along said paylines, starting from the first reel. The rocks with yellow symbols etched into them are the low pays. If you land a 5-of-a-kind, you can win up to 16x the bet. The witch paraphernalia and the cute cat with wings are the high pays. Landing 5 matching high pays can win you up to 500x the stake.
On any spin, you might trigger the Witch Levels Feature. This is when a Witch will appear above one of the reels. The number of symbols which light up below her indicates the number of Wilds she will add to the grid. She may cast the Wilds down diagonally or straight down. These Wilds substitute for all pay symbols. They can function as pay symbols, too, with a 5-of-a-kind win worth 500x.
Landing 3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols will award 10, 15 and 30 free spins respectively. During the round every time another Bonus symbol lands, a witch will appear above that reel. Her level will start off at 1, therefore she’ll add 1 Wild on each subsequent spin. Land another scatter on the same reel and her level will increase by 1, so she’ll then add 2 Wilds on each spin, and so on until she reaches the maximum level 5. You can also win further free spins. Landing 3, 4 or 5 scatters on the same spin will award an extra 3, 4 and 5 free spins respectively.
If you want to increase your odds of triggering the bonus (outside the UK), you can select the Super Stake option in the base game. This increases your bet contribution by 50%, but it’s then twice as likely that you’ll trigger the bonus. Players outside the UK should be able to buy instant access to free spins for 100x the bet too.
The game’s advertised level of volatility is medium, but it felt higher to me. I hit some rather barren spells, but when I did hit wins, they were usually big ones. A lot of that is thanks to the high value of the standard pay symbols. The Witch Levels feature helped me hit quite a few wins, too.
Witches may randomly appear above the reels. When they do, they will add between 1 and 5 Wilds to the grid.
3, 4 or 5 scatters award 10, 15 and 30 free spins respectively. During play, land a scatter on one of the reels and a witch will appear above it, casting down Wilds on each subsequent spin. Increase the number of Wilds by landing more scatters.
The game’s RTP is 96% and its mathematical model is medium-volatile. That said, given the high value of the pay symbols and how infrequently I managed to hit wins, I’d say the game plays more like one with high volatility. Regardless, I managed to see plenty of opportunities for big wins in the base game.
Triggering the free spins round was a little difficult. I even ended up using the Super Stake feature. That at least appeared to do the trick. I hit some really big wins while playing it, thanks mainly to the ever-present Wild-granting witches. I could see how it might be possible to hit the game’s 6,000x max win.
The setting looks like it's a top-down view of a mediaeval courtyard at night. Outside each of the 4 corners of the 5x5 game area is a pillar with a torch on it, which serves to illuminate the area. The surrounding mountains and trees are covered in snow.
The graphics and cartoon artwork are quite basic but look fine, plus the reels and the symbols are well animated. The music made me think of Disney fairy tale films – it doesn’t have much of a melody and is easily forgettable, mind. You’ll have more or less the same audiovisual experience regardless of whether you choose to play on desktop or mobile as the game isn’t particularly complex and things are easy to follow. I particularly like how your wins are totalled up on each spin.
Snowflake Sorcery is a nice and simple slot. It doesn’t stand out in any way, but it also doesn’t really put a foot wrong. It looks fine, it’s fun to play, and there’s every chance you could come away with a nice big haul.
