Oni Hunter Plus Review
In Japanese, an 'oni' is known as a demon or yōkai in folklore with the title of Oni Hunter being implied as a demon hunter. It's clear that Microgaming and Gacha Studios Oni Hunter Plus take inspiration from animes but the biggest one has to be Demon Slayer also known as Kimetsu no Yaiba.
This action and adventure slot plays on 3-reels and features 5 paylines followed by 3 different free spin options, a pick me feature and a respin feature. If you love anime-inspired slots filled with intriguing features, then Oni Hunter Plus is one not to miss.
Design
The slot is situated in the middle of the screen with a forest surrounding it showcasing that this slot is clearly designed with mobile in mind. It can be a little jarring with animations in the middle but nowhere else and there's also a colour change between the trees in the middle and the trees to the far right.
As for the overall inspiration, it's so clear that this has taken influence from Demon Slayer. The main character looks like Tanjiro Kamado, whilst the female one looks like Nezuko and the boy with the peach coloured hair looks like Sabito. The game also has a male looking like Sakonji Urokodaki and a little bird looking similar to the one that Zenitsu Agatsuma has.
This slot also has an oriental-inspired track with wind instruments paired with stringed instruments and drums making something intense. It's a great soundtrack but there is a cut-off point where it loops and it's painfully obvious. Sadly, it seems like this game had the workings to be a masterpiece in terms of design but falls with little mistakes.
Gameplay
The overall gameplay for this slot is pretty standard for a 3-reel slot but the added free spin features definitely improve it. Whilst the presentation may not be anything special, the gameplay is thrilling and rewarding at times.
All the menus are in the middle of the screen at the bottom with the spin button right in the centre. The bet level is to the right whilst the additional menu setting is to the left.
Win Potential
Thankfully, the win potential starts off great with an outstanding RTP of 97.15% which is way over the average standard and excellent. This slot contains a high volatility level leading to larger wins that you often have to wait for but they are rewarding when it does.
We were surprised to find the maximum win for this slot at 1,000x your stake which is quite low for an online slot but it's not a complete deal-breaker especially considering the RTP is high.
Our Verdict
Overall, it seems that Oni Hunter Plus has taken a huge load of inspiration with the aesthetic and it works for some parts - but fails in the ones where the design cheapened out for mobile. Sadly, the mobile direction will isolation desktop players or tablet users as it looks incredibly odd.
Despite this, the gameplay is engaging and the 3 free spins can be very rewarding. Whilst the win potential isn't fantastic, the RTP makes up for the lack of huge wins. There really isn't any other slot like this one and we recommend giving it a spin if you love animes or slots filled with features.
