Watch as huge multipliers make their way to the top of the grid and increase your wins at the same time and low-paying symbols disappear to the depths of Beelzebub's bedroom. The two bonus games offer everything you need with an even higher frequency.

Hounds of Hell Review

What have you done to annoy these angry beasts with super sharp fangs? They seem to have taken exception with something that's been said and look ready to pounce at any moment. The sad truth is that you need them on your side as without their multiplying powers, the wins look set to be fairly weak. I'll be keeping everything crossed for you!

Gameplay & Features

Scatter Pays returns to the Hacksaw Gaming design suite this February with a 5x5 setup that requires matching symbols to form groups which are at least six strong. The lowest payers are hardly worth mentioning as you need at least eight of these to produce a win that is equal to your bet amount.

The pictures are a little better but you'll still need to see the three highest-paying symbols to do any real damage. The biggest win available is a 10-plus group of all-seeing eyes which gets you 50x.

These small wins are enhanced by the hellhound symbols – possibly up to the value of 20,000x. That's the max win and to get there you're going to need to see these dogs an awful lot.

As they land, they produce multipliers for any wins that are generated on the same spin before heading up to the top of the reels to spread their love. The collective multiplier values get added together to determine your win and some of the hellhounds will add multipliers up to 50x and others can even multiply that figure by up to 10x.

If two or more of these hellhound symbols appear on adjacent reels and on the same row, they form a pack and this will help to increase the multiplier values. The adder values stretch up to 100x and the multipliers can now be up to 20x.

Occasionally, a losing spin might force all of the low-paying symbols to disappear from the grid and bring new ones down into their place. The replacements could be hellhound symbols.

Bonus Games

Three or four scatter symbols are enough to trigger the standard and super free spins bonuses respectively. Before you start, you can gamble your 10 free spins by choosing three of the orbs that contain a number of spins. You might get even more spins or you might be worse off.

The standard game is called What The Hell and this provides 10 free spins – it's very similar to the base game. The main difference is that the collected multipliers stay above the reels until the end of the future. You also see Hounds are Loose producing the disappearance of low-paying symbols if you get three non-winning spins in a row. Extra scatter symbols will give you extra spins.

Four scatter symbols give you another 10 free spins and all of the modifications from the standard version. Now, hellhound multipliers add together and you're guaranteed to land a hellhound symbol on activated reels. Reels are activated the first time the hellhound lands.

You can make your spins five times more likely to trigger a bonus game by paying 3x your stake and 60x will get you a spin with at least three hell-hound symbols on it.

Outside the UK, the standard bonus game costs 100x and the super version is 250x.

Hounds of Hell - Hell Hounds

Hell Hounds

These symbols produce multipliers that can spread to enhance your wins. They go to the top of their reels and either add to the existing multiplier or multiply it. The adding symbols are worth up to 50x and the multiplying ones pay up to 10x. They can also form packs to increase the adding and multiplying power.

Hounds of Hell - Hounds Are Loose

Hounds Are Loose

When you least expect it, the low-paying symbols might be removed and new ones can drop down into their place. You have a higher chance of landing hellhound symbols as the new ones arrive.

Hounds of Hell - Free Spins

Free Spins

Three scatter symbols trigger the standard 10 free spins and now multipliers are collected and kept in place for the duration. After 3 non-winning spins, you'll see the Hounds are Loose feature and if you hit four scatter symbols, you get all of the above and activated Hell Reels when the hellhounds land. Hellhound symbols are now guaranteed to land on an activated reel.

Win Potential

Due to the low symbol values, you can expect many of your wins to be a little sub-par. A group of six are needed to create a win and there are only two symbols that can produce a return equal to or larger than your bet for a six-of-a-kind. So you're either going to need huge groups or witness the hellhounds in abundance. Unfortunately, I didn't see either and I found the base game wins to be quite underwhelming.

Moving into the standard bonus game was a relief as the hounds appeared with much higher frequency. I still walked away from Hounds of Hell below where I started but with fairly high volatility that's always a possibility – the flip side is that you never know when a big win might pop up.

Design

I would like to say that the hounds are waiting patiently to the side of the grid but that just isn't true! They look ready to tear your spin finger off and possibly do some other damage while they're at it. It's all very spiritual and eerie as you make your way through this adventure and the music helps add a little occult flavour at the same time.

It sounds angry and terrifying and if that's what you want from your next slot, then you aren't going to find more tension than this.

Our Verdict

The spreading power of these angry multiplying dogs can turn insignificant wins into quite exceptional ones. That can happen throughout the base game and the bonus games so don't be surprised if a big win pops up when you least expect it.
