Get bonusLasers and flying saucers abound in Zap Attack, Thunderkick’s new 5x5 alien-invasion-themed slot. Fans will find it reminiscent of Pink Elephants 1 and 2, but this is definitely the most eye-catching of the three, and with Free Spins, trigger-happy aliens and Expanding Multipliers, it might prove to be the most fun, too.

Zap Attack is set in the stunning and amusingly named Roswealth, a small desert town evocative of those of ‘Close Encounters’, ‘Mars Attacks’ and, well, ‘Roswell’. After choosing your bet, you’ve got the potential to land wins on 25 paylines, with an average 96% RTP.
As you’d imagine, the paylines begin from the left-hand side of the grid. 10 to Ace are your low pays, awarding between 1 to 1.5 times your bet for a 5 of a kind. The 5 characters—sheriff, waitress, old lady, shovel-carrying hick and alien—are your mid to high pays.
5 matching symbols will win between 2x and 10x the bet, although Alien symbols pay out even if only 2 of them drop. Your Wilds come in the form of Flying Saucers, and they can substitute for all symbols, except for Scatter symbols.
Now the fun really starts. When one of these ‘Invading Wild’ flying saucer symbols fall, they expand to cover the whole reel with a multiplier of 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x, multiplying any winning combinations it’s a part of.
But that’s not all. These aliens are a fertile bunch: they can’t stop multiplying! If more than one Expanding Multiplier falls, they multiply each other. For example, a 3x and a 4x will give you a combined multiplier of 12x. Players could potentially be awarded a multiplier of 125x (5x5x5)! Beam me up!
Scatter symbols come in the form of TV sets—land at least 3 to gain access to the Bonus Game. 3, 4 or 5 TV Scatter symbols award 7, 11 and 15 free spins, respectively. If you land TV sets in the Bonus Game itself, you get even more free spins:
To the right of the Bonus Game, you’ll see a hierarchy of the Roswealth inhabitants. Some Alien symbols that fall onto the grid will be toting lasers, with which they’ll randomly zap the human characters.
Once a character’s been zapped 10 times, they turn into high-pay Alien symbols themselves, both to the right of the grid and within it, thereby upping your chances of landing winning combinations. When an alien-human transition takes place, players are also awarded another free spin. The new alien symbols remain in place until the end of the round.
Some of you outside the UK can gain immediate entry to the Bonus Game by shelling out 60x your stake for 3 guaranteed Scatter Symbols, 120x for 4 Scatter Symbols and 250x for 5 Scatter symbols.
Not only do these ‘Invading Wild’ symbols award multipliers of between 2x and 5x, but they multiply each other, too. Watch the skies for a potential max Expanding Multiplier of 125x!
3 or more TV Scatter symbols trigger the Bonus Game. Start off with a maximum of 15 free spins. If more TV sets land, win even more free spins! Further increase your win potential by transforming human characters into high-paying alien-human hybrid symbols.
Players will find Zap Attack very similar to Pink Elephants and Pink Elephants 2. This new slot, however, is definitely the standout of the three. It looks like Thunderkick has pulled out all the stops for this one.
This is a simple 5x5 slot, but it’s easily the most visually impressive one I’ve played in a long time. The action takes place in Roswealth—as you’d imagine, a typical small desert town in the USA—with a very appealing purple sunset colour-scheme. It’s also not just the superb graphics and high-end comic book artwork that’ll keep you engaged. There’s a really immersive depth to the sound effects, and it might just be my own personal preference, but the eerie, chilled-out Portishead-meets-Queens-of-the-Stone soundtrack is superb. I could listen to it all day.
The game play is somewhat limited when it comes to features, but what it lacks in complexity it more than makes up for in no-nonsense fun. The layout is perfect for you to just pick up and play, and the Expanding Wilds feature will keep you spinning. Even players who are more inclined towards games with a variety of Bonus features might be forced to rethink their outlook after playing.
The max win of 5,000x your bet isn’t much to phone home about, but the 96.15% RTP is just above the average. You’ll also have high volatility to contend with. Despite the relatively small max win, there are plenty of opportunities to fill your pockets if everything goes your way.
A very aesthetically appealing slot. If you’re after bags of features, it might not be for you, but given the sound, visuals and game play, I’d still advise you to give it a few spins. Thunderkick can abduct and experiment on me as often as they like.
