Ready to get your goosebumps into action? I hope so. If watching scary films growing up taught me anything, it’s mix a church with some nasty monsters and a possessed priest and you’re onto a winner. Hopefully, the features work well with the theme and bring it all together perfectly.
As you begin to discover The Watcher, it presents obstacles that you need to get your head around. Mainly, this is building up your expectations, bringing them down again, boosting them back up again and ultimately, bringing them down again. Let me show you what I mean.
There's a huge game area with six reels and six rows. Your first thought is scatter pays, perhaps? Not so. This is a 40-line slot so there are going to be many ways that you can't win a prize on such a large area, unfortunately.
Then you realise that you can win from left to right and right to left. You see how we're going up and down here? The basic symbols have a max value of 1x for a group of six and the six picture symbols can fetch you up to 12.5x.
Time to go back down again as most of the picture symbols barely return your stake for a group of three and let's be honest, these are the most popular wins.
In my experience, the high volatility was off the charts and you can go many spins without seeing anything happen at all. But when things do happen, your balance might be incredibly grateful.
This roller coaster slot journey continues as the wild feature appears and this can create a number of shapes to add wild symbols to the reels. These wild symbols have the same value as the top-paying picture symbol.
There's also a mystery multiplier and this applies to all wins.
Three or more bonus symbols can grab you up to 20 free spins and now wild symbols appear and roam between spins. The size of the wild can differ as it is a slippery octopus-type character that refuses to conform to one simple look.
Blue bonus symbols will increase the multiplier and pink bonus symbols increase the size of the wild. Landing five bonus symbols will get you an extra spin.
Outside the UK, there is a Super Stake option whereby players can pay 0.25x their bet to increase the chances of landing more scatter symbols.
There's also a direct entry ticket to the free spins bonus with a fairly hefty 100x price tag. I gave it a go and only received six free spins. My final payout from the bonus game was 35x.
Wilds can appear in the base game and during the bonus game. They don't have a simple shape and will decide how they want to behave as they land on the reels. You could get any number of these with a payout worth up to 12.5x.
Between 3 and 6 bonus symbols get you 6–20 free spins. Wilds will roam between the spins and can change size. You can add to your global multiplier and grab extra free spins as well.
The advertised max payout is 9,000x and with such extreme volatility, it may well be possible. Just don't expect it to happen very often. The multiplier will be key and this working in conjunction with those wild symbols is the only way to boost your balance upwards. Get a decent run of spins and you never know. The RTP is 96.01%.
My favourite part about this game is the design. Set in a beautiful church, the huge game area is carefully guarded by The Watcher, who seems to be the creature that someone has summoned from below. It's a good-looking game with a decent soundtrack and I like the symbol imagery as well, particularly the frightening redhead! This spectacular display is available on your mobile phone as well but I don't think the smaller screen really does it justice.
There are some aspects of The Watcher that I love, mainly the design and the idea of flexible paylines. The wild symbols stretch and grow, but this is nothing new. A random multiplier can do you a few favours and the free spins game may produce something decent on a good day.
There's nothing much extra to look forward to if you get into the bonus game in terms of action, so it's purely there for those seeking a bigger payout. I'm a little divided by this one and I'll hand it over to you guys to see what you think.
