In Shaolin Master, you're looking at a 5x6 game grid. There are no paylines in play as this is a cluster pays slot, so reels aren't necessary. Wins are created by landing matching symbols that connect horizontally or vertically and as they form, winning symbols disappear and new ones come to join the grid.
The lowest paying royals will get you up to 30x for a group of 15 or more matching symbols but the pictures can provide up to 120x.
Wild symbols are available but these are a little special in this game. They are known as chi orbs and not only do they substitute for regular payers but they also provide multipliers. There are three orbs available – red, blue and balance.
When a chi orb forms part of a win, it provides its services as a wild symbol and applies a 1x multiplier for both the blue and red orbs. Blue orbs increase by +1 each time it's part of a cluster win and red orbs will increase by +1 for the same number of winning symbols that form the cluster. The balance orbs take the values of the red and the blue multipliers and offer an extra boost to your payouts.
Playing for free is possible and you could see up to 12 free spins if you're lucky. 10 spins come when you land three scatter symbols and 12 are provided by four scatter symbols. During the bonus, symbols from the base game can reappear with green chi orbs and green gem multipliers.
Multipliers increase as wins form and can be multiplied by the modifier symbol. The symbol values are up to 10x and as these land, the reel multiplier is activated. Activated multipliers apply to all wins and will add together when necessary. Activated multipliers get you three extra spins and the max value is 9,999x.
For something a little different, you can try and land five scatter symbols and this will give you three respins, which are replenished each time a special symbol lands. You now have stone blocks with multipliers appearing above each reel.
Landing multiplier modifier blocks will increase your multipliers and you can also see epic versions of both blue and green gems. Ice blocks bring multipliers from the reel multiplier and special crusher blocks destroy multiplier blocks to make room for others.
While playing the master bonus game, I saw special symbols increasing the reel multipliers quite regularly and before long, I was on my way to a fairly decent payout. The trend continued for a few more spins and before long, the block multipliers were forming on the reels along with the reel multiplier above them. Eventually, I walked off with 412x.
Three types of chi orb exist and these are wild multiplier symbols. They multiply the value of any clusters they are part of and you'll notice that the blue ones increase by +1 after a win. Red orbs increase by +1 for each symbol that was part of a winning cluster and balance orbs only appear on cascades. These apply the multiplier value of both red and blue orbs on the grid.
3 scatter symbols award 10 free spins and four scatter symbols get you 12. A green orb and multiplier are now available with values worth up to 10x, which are applied to the reel multiplier. Each time a multiplier is activated, you get three more spins and the maximum overall multiplier is 9,999x.
With five free spins, you can activate the Master respins bonus. Stone blocks now appear and the reels have multipliers above them. Multiplier blocks can add or multiply your reel multipliers and again, you can get a maximum of 9,999x from this bonus. Special blocks offer modifiers to enhance your wins.
I experienced quite a few small wins during the base game and the chi orbs did make a bit of a difference. However, it wasn't until I progressed into the Master bonus game that I began to see those big returns. I picked up a win of over 400x during that part of the show, which I don't think was bad at all! 10,000x is the maximum prize available and the volatility is medium.
Shaolin Master feels very Hacksaw in its approach to this theme with a little master monk waiting patiently to the left-hand side and his student practising to the right of the grid. It's a pleasant soundtrack and there are enough Oriental-inspired details in this one to allow you to take a little look around as you hit the spin button.

Shaolin Master hasn't offered me anything I haven't seen before but I like the way the orbs create multipliers and help you grab some combo wins in the base game. That said, it's pretty obvious that the biggest payouts and most of the tension build up in the bonus games, namely the Master bonus.
