One of my favourite Christmas-themed slots from previous years is Santa’s Stack: Dream Drop by Relax Gaming, which is another grid slot that comes with a big jackpot. But is Santa's Xmas Rush just another jovial gimmick of a game designed to draw you in when you’re feeling particularly merry, or can it stand alone as a great slot regardless of its theme? Santa's Xmas Rush is a 6x6 cluster pays grid slot, meaning that you don’t form winning paylines from left to right, like with a standard slot. Instead, matching 6 or more symbols next to each other either horizontally or vertically creates a winning combo.
This slot uses cascading reels, whereby when you make a winning combo, the symbols that formed the winning combination are removed and new ones fall into their places. This gives you the potential to create another winning combo on the same spin.
There are 7 regular-paying symbols, starting with different coloured gems in the shape of Christmas baubles, and then moving up to the higher-paying reindeer, gingerbread man and stocking. There’s also the snowglobe scatter and Santa symbol that triggers the Xmas Rush feature.
During the base game, between 3 and 8 random positions can get marked with a snowflake. If you hit a winning combo, once the cascading reels have ended, if at least 1 Santa symbol is in view, all of the snowflake-marked positions will reveal an instant cash prize of up to 2,500x or a respin. You can trigger more respins by finding more Santa symbols during this feature.
I quite liked the base game, as I’m generally quite a fan of grid slots. I was a little surprised that there are only 7 regular-paying symbols, as most cluster pays slots offer more than 10. However, with fewer symbols in play, it could be said that you’re more likely to land winning combos.
I eventually managed to trigger the Xmas Rush feature, but I only got a 0.5x multiplier out of it, which was a bit of a shame. I also found myself in the free spins round after what felt like an age in Winter Wonderland, but again, it wasn’t the most successful, and I only saw a couple of quid come my way.
Landing 4, 5, 6, or 7 scatter symbols triggers the free spins round and lets you enter with 10, 14, 18, or 22 free spins, respectively. During this feature, snowflakes are not added randomly. Instead, each winning combination has the chance to add a snowflake to different positions. Snowflakes stay on the reels until the round ends, awarding cash prizes when Santa symbols are also in view.
As mentioned, I managed to get into the free spins round with 10 spins, which is a pretty good starting point. But perhaps I was on the naughty list this year as I barely got out of it with enough to buy a box of Christmas crackers!

The animations are cute, cartoony and very Disney-esque. The symbols are vibrant, colourful and very Christmassy, and the backdrop of a snow-covered landscape with Christmas trees galore ties the whole theme together.
The soundtrack is a very generic Jingle Bells-inspired affair, but at least it wasn't too annoying and I didn't have to turn it off like I do with some slot games.
Santa stands next to the reels, bobbing up and down and, I imagine, getting ready to shake his big bowl of jelly!
Ultimately, this slot delivers what it promises – a lighthearted, merry and festive gaming session with some decent prizes.

As a grid slot, Santa's Xmas Rush offers slightly more dynamic gameplay than a lot of standard games, but I found it a bit too time-consuming waiting for the special features, and it seems that the Xmas Rush and free spins rounds are really where the Christmas presents are at!
If you like your festive fun, then this could be a great game for you. But if you're a bit more of a Scrooge like me, you might find this game just a little bit too cute for your taste.
