In the spirit of the season, Thunderkick is gifting players the chance to play Hot Turkey. This is a slot that appears, at first glance, quite wholesome. However, dig a little deeper and you’ll discover that there’s a dark side to this crazy Christmas offering.
One of the first things that players are likely to find when exploring Hot Turkey is that the Cluster Pays mechanic keeps things ticking along quite nicely, in a fun and frenetic sort of way.
The Cluster Pays system comes into play when five or more matching symbols are connected in any configuration, whether that’s horizontal or vertical. The symbols will then vanish, and an Avalanche is triggered.
The Exploding Wild is represented by an understandably fearful turkey. This symbol can trigger randomly, detonating and clearing a 3x3 area. In its place, it leaves a multiplier grid with each square containing a 2x multiplier.
As more Exploding Wilds are detonated, the affected cells that overlap with any existing Multiplier Grids will have their multipliers doubled. Enough of these can push multipliers up to a maximum of 128x. These can stack up quite quickly if an Avalanche goes in your favour!
Wild symbols can substitute for any other symbol with the exception of Scatters. Avalanches are triggered when a Cluster Pay is hit or when a Wild explodes and continues with each new win. Also, Multiple Cluster Pays can occur at the same time, which can have the effect of creating big cascades.
I found that the medium-high volatility level offered a fairly satisfying balance, and I did land a few worthwhile wins, even in the base game.
Hitting three scatter symbols will kick the Bonus Game into gear. The game screen fills with flames as the heat is turned up and 10 free spins are awarded.
The Multiplier Grids in the base game will reset when the Bonus Game starts. However, those that are activated in the Bonus Game are sticky and will remain active throughout the entire bonus round.
Within the bonus round, Avalanches and Clusters continue to produce impressive chain reactions. I found it perfectly possible to stack up some decent wins, and even trigger respins, in the bonus round.

Let’s get this out of the way: the 94.13% RTP isn’t going to dazzle anyone. However, in my time with Hot Turkey, I found that the medium-high volatility and potential 10,000x win combined to produce an experience that felt genuinely rewarding.
Once into the bonus round, I found that the Multiplier Grids stacked quite quickly, overlapping and doubling to create some healthy multipliers. Substantial wins feel within reach, thanks to these, as well as the Cluster Pays and cascades.
Hot Turkey’s quaint and cosy setting has the potential to lure players into a false sense of security. When things really kick off, this game can be almost as hectic as an actual festive family gathering!
Those who are familiar with Thunderkick’s output might find Hot Turkey familiar. This is because it’s strongly reminiscent of a previous title called Hot Potato, albeit with some festive dressing and, unfortunately, a lower RTP.
Thunderkick isn’t exactly reinventing Christmas with Hot Turkey, but it does provide a fun spin on some traditional festive fare.
Despite Hot Turkey’s low RTP rate and high likelihood of making vegetarians uncomfortable, there’s a lot to like here. The gameplay is kinetic and well-paced, and there’s some solid entertainment value to be had.
Ultimately, this game is likely to provide a bit of Christmas fun for some players, and it’s definitely no ‘turkey’ in the derogatory sense.
