Red Tiger is back with an ancient Rome slot that focuses more on politics than it does gladiatorial action. Curiously, Roman Emperors’ high volatility is more akin to that of the coliseum than it is to the Roman Forum. Have you got what it takes to win your freedom? Well, there are plenty of features to take advantage of and plenty of fun to be had.
The game has 25 paylines on a game area that’s 5x3 in dimension. Starting from the leftmost reel, you have to land at least 3 matching symbols along said paylines to win. The 10 to Ace symbols are the low pays, with a 5-of-a-kind being worth up to 5x the stake. The olives, helmet, ring, scroll and chariot are the high pays. Land a 5-of-a-kind and you can pocket up to 20x. The Wilds substitute for all these symbols, and a 5-of-a-kind made up of just Wilds is worth 40x.
You’ll notice there are Roman emperors sitting above reels 2, 3 and 4: Pompey above 2, Caesar above 3 and Crassus above 4. Landing a Silver SPQR symbol on their respective reels will fill up 1 unit of their 3-unit power bars. These accumulate as you play. Once you fill 1 of their bars, you’ll activate the corresponding feature. A Gold SPQR symbol will fill 1 unit of all 3 power bars.
Fill Pompey’s bar and you’ll activate a respin where no low-pay symbols will land. Caesar’s feature consists of activating a respin where between 3 and 6 Wilds are guaranteed to fall. If you fill Crassus’ bar, on the respin your wins will be multiplied by 3x, 5x, 10x or 20x. If on any of these respins no win lands, you’ll be granted further respins until one does. It is possible to activate all 3 on the same spin. If that does happen, the functions will play out in the following order: Pompey, Caesar then Crassus.
If you land 2 Free Spin scatters, you’ll win 12 free spins. During the round, if you land any Silver SPQRs, they will immediately activate the Roman Emperor function on the same reel. A Gold SPQR will activate all 3 features. You can also win another 12 free spins if you manage to land 2 more scatters on the same spin.
You definitely notice the high volatility in the base game. Wins seldom hit and when they do, they’re usually made up of low pays. Every once in a while, though, you hit 4- or maybe even a 5-of-a-kind made of high pays, and they’re worth plenty. If luck’s on your side, you could hit some massive wins.
The free spins round is more or less the same as the base game. The only real difference is that the SPQR symbols immediately activate the Emperor functions. It’s only a small change but it does make things very interesting. Be aware that it might be a while before you’re able to trigger the round, though.
Accumulate 3 SPQR symbols to fill Pompey’s power bar and activate a respin where no royals land. Fill Caesar’s bar to activate a respin with between 3 and 6 guaranteed Wilds. A Crassus’ respin will multiply your wins by 3x, 5x, 10x or 20x. Respins continue until you hit at least 1 win.
2 scatters award 12 free spins. Any Silver Roman Emperor scatters immediately active their respective functions. A Gold one activates all 3. Land 2 more scatters for 12 more free spins.
There are 25 paylines on a 5x3 grid, which is plenty. The problem is that the high-pay symbols don’t fall very often, so it might be the case that a lot of your wins will be meagre. Overall, the game definitely plays in keeping with its stated high volatility and 95.76% RTP, so you might have to endure some barren spells before you see big returns.
The max win is 8,940x, which is decent. Having played the free spins round, I could see how a few lucky individuals could walk away with such an amount, what with the SPQR immediately activating the Emperor features.
The setting appears to be a political meeting in ancient Rome, possibly within the Roman Forum. As you’d imagine, there are lots of pillars, grand statues and lots of gesticulating Roman politicians in robes. The 5x3 game area is draped in red and gold velvet. The thumping drums and the string orchestra go well with the aesthetic.
The artwork in the background is nice, but it’s all very static. The symbols are quite plain and there seems to be an occasional jerkiness to the reels. Overall, the game isn’t much to write home about visually. The game itself is quite simple, and the designers haven’t complicated things with respect to the layout. Your experience will probably be the same whether you’re playing on mobile or desktop.
Roman Emperors’ audiovisual presentation is fairly basic. Given the high volatility, the base game might sometimes feel like a bit of a slog. Nonetheless, the more you play, the more features you can trigger, and that’s where the game’s ample win potential lies.
