Gold Splash: Toots Froots Review
Most slot games based around Ancient Egypt take themselves pretty seriously, but that’s not the case with Gold Splash: Toots Froots! From the moment the game launches, you know you’re in for some fun – and hopefully, a few cash prizes too, although that’s never guaranteed when playing any slot game.
Design
There’s a cartoon aesthetic to Gold Splash: Toots Froots, with an Egyptian market setting and a cheerful Pharaoh appearing as the top-paying symbol on the reels. Gold and enamel playing card icons are joined by a selection of fruits, but here they’re depicted as precious gemstones, giving the game a little extra sparkle.
The soundtrack seemed really promising at first, with ambient synthesisers reminiscent of Starburst – right until the point when loud, generic slot machine sounds took over. Usually, there’s an option to mute the music or game sounds, but here it’s all or nothing – and nothing seems the better option!
Gameplay
In addition to the usual slot mechanic of lining up matching symbols across paylines, Gold Splash: Toots Froots adds in the Gem Drop overlay features. These clear, blue overlays land on top of the reels, activating when they directly cover any Gold Splash icon. This triggers an instant award of the Gem Drop overlay value, in addition to any regular symbol wins.
Land three or more watermelon Scatters to activate 6 free spins. Gem Drop overlays can now come in larger sizes of either 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4, increasing the likelihood of covering one of more Gold Splash icons. Gem Drops remain on the reels, nudging down one row for each free spin until they drop off the bottom of the reels.
Win Potential
You’ll need to match up five-of-a-kind playing card symbols to win back your stake, although you could double or triple it for lining up fruity gemstones. The Pharaoh returns up to 6x your bet, but it’s the watermelon Scatter that tops the paytable, awarding up to 50x your bet for five of a kind, and that’s before you take any free spin winnings into account.
Gem Drop overlays come with a value from 1x – 100x your stake, with the amount awarded when the overlay lands on a Gold Splash icon. This triggers a collection feature during free spins, in which all overlay values are awarded, so this is where some of the biggest wins will be found. Where two or more Gold Splash icons are covered by Gem Drop overlays, all other Gem Drop values are awarded once for each activated Gold Splash.
With any spin, a Jackpot Spin could be randomly awarded. A single gold reel spins up one of the following prizes, with three progressive jackpots that are part of a multi-operator Gem Splash™ Jackpot award:
- Grand Jackpot
- Major Jackpot
- Minor Jackpot
- 10x, 15x, 20x, 30x, 50x or 100x the bet.
Our Verdict
We found Gold Splash: Toots Froots to be a whole lot of fun, particularly once the free spins bonus was activated. The Gem Drop feature adds an extra edge to the game, and the nudging Gem Drops during free spins give plenty of opportunities to spin up a few cash prizes.
The game’s RTP comes in at under 96%, but the progressive jackpot account for the statistic being lower than some other games. It’s not the most exciting slot we’ve ever played by any stretch of the imagination, but if you’re looking for some fun and the chance of a progressive jackpot prize, Gold Splash: Toots Froots is definitely worth a closer look.
