At first glance, you might think you've arrived at the doorstep of a grid slot. That isn't the case and regular wins form by landing matching groups, starting on the leftmost reel. The group continues to grow on consecutive reels with a five-of-a-kind being the highest prize.
So, not exactly stunning payouts from the regular symbols but at least there are 3,125 ways to win a prize. To enhance your wins, you'll need some of the features and modifiers to rear their heads as often as possible.
One way to do this is via the symbol multiplier. Take a look to the right of the reels and you'll see an extra set of symbols. These are the high-paying symbols and each time a win is made up of these symbols, they receive a multiplier. If another win is created using the same symbols, the multiplier pays out and continues to grow. A spin without providing a win results in the multiplier resetting. It's similar to Totem Guardians in some ways.
Wild symbols appear on the final 4 reels and substitute for all other regular playing symbols - nothing new there then. Super symbols are a little larger than life and can grow up to 4x4. It's worth pointing out that these count as individual symbols regardless of the collective block. As they land, they remove everything in their path and end up on the bottom of the reels. Destroyed blocks behind them now receive a cascade and new symbols drop in.
The Road Kill feature will zoom in when you least expect it and can leave Wilds in its wake. Alternatively, it might destroy some symbols and bring fresh ones into view.
The bonus game comes courtesy of 3, 4 or 5 Bonus symbols and for this, you'll get 10, 12 or 15 free spins. The bonus game isn't anything out of the ordinary and you’ll recognise everything from the base game. The only change is that the symbol multipliers don't reset between losing spins. Extra free spins can come your way if you land further Bonus symbols during the round.
After a win involving the high-paying symbols, a multiplier arrives and applies to any following wins involving that animal. The multiplier resets after a losing spin.
The Roadkill symbol can tear across the row to add Wilds or destroy symbols to trigger a cascade of new symbols. This could result in a win if you’re lucky.
These large symbols can be up to 4x4 in size and when they drop, they crush everything in their path. They stop on the bottom row and destroyed symbols receive a cascade.
10 spins are yours for landing 3 Scatter symbols during the base game, while 4 Scatters get you 12 spins and 5 Scatters award 15 spins. The main difference here is that the symbol multipliers don’t reset.
I'm pretty sure that these nasty-looking creatures don't enjoy any human contact, but that's not to say that this slot deserves the same treatment. There's plenty going on here to keep you entertained and if you hit the right run of spins, you can see all of the modifiers bring the reels to life.
These deranged pets seem to be living in somebody's apartment but no one appears to be taking care of them. I don't even want to think about what they're eating. Everything's nasty and grimy and could use a lick of paint, but that's not for you to worry about. Just sit back and enjoy the madness while listening to a suitably odd soundtrack on a range of devices, including mobile phones.
I was fortunate enough to witness the Roadkill feature fly across the screen a few times, but it didn't bring an awful lot of excitement or winning action along with it. Wins were fairly infrequent as well and as the multiplier feature continues to reset, it’ll rarely be of use. I've come across this mechanic before and I found it too restrictive then - I haven't changed my mind. The bonus game doesn't heighten the entertainment factor but at least the multiplier won't reset.
If you can survive long enough without catching something nasty from these filthy animals, you could go on to win up to 5,000x. Don't expect to see regular winning action as the volatility is pretty high and will attack your balance before occasionally paying out a super prize - choose your game type wisely! The RTP is 96%.
Fugly Pets is a cute(ish) concept that had the potential for so much more. The modifiers and features are all there ready to go but they just limp into view rather than arrive with a bang. On a positive note, it looks great and you can't fault the design team for all of the intricate little extras - this is a well-thought-out display. If you're looking for entertainment value and regular wins, this might not be right for you but big prize hunters may be tempted.
