At last! A blacksmith-themed slot! I’m being facetious but in actual fact, the developers at Pragmatic Play look like they’re on top forge with this one. Nevertheless, Forging Wilds is not for the faint of hearth. Have you got what it takes to forge some Wilds and hit some big wins… with your hammer?
The game’s 5x3 grid has 20 paylines. Winning combinations consist of landing matching symbols along said paylines, starting from the first reel. Jack to Ace are the low-pay symbols, although they’re worth more or less the same as each other. A 5-of-a-kind will pocket you up to 2.5x the stake. The forging instruments and the blacksmith are the high pays. Land a 5-of-a-kind and you can win between 10x and 40x.
Wilds appear on all reels and can substitute for all pay symbols. They also have a number of special features. They can function as a pay symbol and are as valuable as the blacksmith symbol. Also, when a Wild lands, once all wins have been calculated, it can randomly become forged. When this happens, the Wild will stay in place and the reels will respin. The Wild also gets a +1x multiplier added to it.
The Wild can stay forged and see an increased multiplier or it can become unforged and disappear on the next spin. The respins end when there are no more forged Wilds on screen. The Wilds and their multipliers apply to all winning combos they’re a part of. If there’s more than 1 multiplier, their values are added together.
Hitting 3, 4 or 5 scatters will trigger Forging Wild Respins and award 5, 10 and 15 Wilds respectively. The game consists of multiple respins. On every new respin, a random number of Wilds will be taken from your pool and added to random positions on the grid—Wilds are only added to the grid via the pool. As in the base game, these Wilds can become forged. If you manage to hit 3, 4 or 5 scatters during the round, you’ll win 5, 10 and 15 additional Wilds.
If you’re outside the UK, you should be able to buy Forging Wild Respins for 75x the stake. Alternatively, you can pay 550x to trigger the round with a guaranteed 15 Wilds.
Maybe I was just lucky, but I managed to hit decent wins very regularly, so I’m surprised to see the game advertised as being highly volatile.
The Forging Wild Respins round didn't strike me as the easiest bonus round to trigger. When I was there, I was a little disappointed as there didn’t seem to be that many ways to win. I think this is more testament to the strength of the base game, though. Regardless, the game is always highly engaging and lots of fun.
When a Wild lands it always has the potential to become forged and stick to the grid. When this happens, you’ll see at least 1 respin and the Wild will obtain a +1x multiplier. The same Wild can trigger further respins and receive increased multipliers.
Landing 3, 4 or 5 scatters will grant you 5, 10 and 15 Wilds respectively. Use your pool of Wilds to see if they become forged and trigger more respins. Land further scatters to be awarded more Wilds to play with.
I was very impressed by the win potential. The game’s main feature, the Forged Wilds, seems to make very regular appearances even in the base game. As they can trigger respins and can carry increasing multipliers, players should find plenty of chances to win big from the off. I’d go as far as to say that the max 10,000x win might be achievable even in the base game.
This might be why I found the Forging Wilds Respins round relatively disappointing. There was still plenty of potential for big wins, but as I’d been spoiled by the base game, I expected more.
The RTP is a whopping 96.52%, and the game’s mathematical model is highly volatile. For me, the game played much more like one with medium volatility.
The setting is a dimly-lit blacksmith’s forge and the only sources of light are the furnace and the glowing metal. This along with the vibrantly-coloured symbols creates a very attractive colour palette made up of reds, blues and purples. I don’t know if the dramatic, eerie orchestral music goes particularly well with the aesthetic, but it certainly sounds good and isn’t at all repetitive.
The designers have done a good job of laying everything out, although it would be nice if we knew when a Wild might perform its functions rather than it just randomly, especially considering that it's such a key part of the game.
I’ve played the game on both desktop and mobile and it always looks and sounds great.
The base game has so many active features and has so much win potential that it almost detracts from the bonus round. This slot also has great audiovisual presentation and Forging Wilds could be a hammer blow to the competition - albeit limited in the metal forging sector!
