This smash-hit slot from Blueprint Gaming spawned an entire series after its original release in 2016, including Eye of Horus Megaways, and I have the distinct pleasure of reviewing the newest version that uses Blueprint’s Rapid Fire Jackpot feature.
Rapid Fire Jackpots range from £250 to £7,500, so they’re more attainable than many of the other progressive jackpot prizes offered on other games. Plus, the top prize in Eye of Horus is 50,000x, so this slot has the potential to be very lucrative indeed.
With 5 reels and 3 rows, Eye of Horus starts off as a very standard slot. You have your generic low-paying letter symbols, followed by some ancient Egyptian paraphernalia including scarab beetles and statues of Anubis, as well as a scatter symbol and a wild in the form of Horus himself.
3 or more scatters will get you into the free games feature, while the Horus Wild expands to cover the entire reel, helping you to create more winning paylines. The god himself features again in the free games round, where he can increase the value of the tablets above the reels.
This release also comes with Blueprint Gaming's fun new Rapid Fire Jackpot mechanic, whereby you can land a progressive prize pot by finding 5 Rapid Fire symbols anywhere on the reels.
With just 10 paylines, you want to get into one of the bonus rounds as quickly as possible, but the old-school Vegas-style play keeps the base game interesting as well.
For some reason, Blueprint has a habit of calling its free spins round ‘free games’, which is a little confusing at first. But once you land 3 or more scatters in the base game, you’ll trigger the free games and realise it is indeed a free spins round.
The free games round has an unusual twist, with the presence of some Egyptian tabs at the top of the reels.
If the Horus Wild appears, he will cast a bright light on the symbols and modify them to become larger in value. These symbols then appear on the reels more frequently during free games and you collect all values at the end of the round.
It took me a very long time to find the scatters and get into the free games feature, but this is due to the game’s high volatility. Once there, I did pick up a few extra quid, but I spent more getting there than I won!
Land 3 or more scatter symbols in the base game to trigger the free games round with 12 initial spins. During this feature, Horus Wilds upgrade the tablets at the top of the reels. You can also find more scatters to give you up to an additional 5 free spins.
Match 5 Rapid Fire symbols anywhere on the reels to trigger the Rapid Fire Wheel, which will give you either a multiplier worth between 5x and 1000x, or one of the progressive pots from Mini to Mega King.
Like all of these new Rapid Fire Jackpot releases, there is plenty of potential to land some very good wins with Eye of Horus. There's a 50,000x top prize up for grabs, as well as multipliers and the progressive jackpot prizes. In other words, there’s plenty to aim for in this game.
Personally, I didn't walk away with too much, as it took me ages to get into the free games feature, and once there I didn't really make up my losses.
The game is highly volatile, which explains the wait, but it does come with a slightly higher-than-average RTP of 96.31%.
I imagine you could be twiddling your thumbs for a while with this release, but if you can get into the free games round or land yourself those Rapid Fire Jackpot symbols, you could be in for a very good day.
I love a true Vegas slot, and Eye of Horus ticks that box perfectly. The design is very retro, with the symbols remaining basic but colourful.
What I love about these types of games is the garish colours used to mark the paylines on the outside of the game board, and the generic noise of a slot machine spinning as the soundtrack.
To be fair to Blueprint, the graphics are very crisp and this colour scheme is very luxurious, with lots of gold and a backdrop of some very opulent-looking pillars.
The scatter symbol is probably the prettiest, as it radiates a burst of golden sunshine through its arches. If you're lucky enough to get Horus to illuminate the tablets above the reels, you’ll start to appreciate that a lot of thought has gone into the design of this game.
I had a great time playing Eye of Horus – I am biased towards a retro slot though. The base game is entertaining, but what you really want is to get into one of those bonus features as quickly as possible.
With a free spins round, and the Rapid Fire Jackpots feature both in play, there's a lot to be won with this game. However, with its high volatility and relatively average RTP, you might end up like me and sit around for quite some time waiting for the wins to start rolling in.
Fans of the ancient Egypt and/or Vegas-style themes will like this game, although it is still a very basic 5x3 slot.
