If you remember spending hours trying to complete a Rubik's Cube to no avail, you could get a little revenge here today. The grid moves to place colored cubes together in winning groups and if you see a big enough collection of the highest paying symbol, you'll have a 500x win on your hands. To me, that sounds far more satisfying than simply trying to slot some coloured stickers together!
This odd Rubik's Cube adventure presents five reels and five rows in a grid format and a scatter pays mechanic. To land a win, you need at least six matching symbols anywhere on the grid and the lowest payers are the blue and green cubes. A group of between 12 and 25 symbols is the best you can hope for and if you can do this with a group of high-paying symbols, you could be looking at a 500x return.
Wild symbols also turn up and substitute for regular payers. You can have lots of wild symbols added to the screen and this is all thanks to the collect meter and subsequent Electro Wild Throw. Looking over to the left-hand side of the game area, you see the Collector Meter with a marker for every three steps. If you hit a win, you complete one step and if you complete all three steps to make it to the next marker, you release the Wild Throw.
In essence, this is an additional three wild symbols added to the grid if you're lucky. It could be one or two though.
Make it to the third place on the grid and you will have received plenty of wild symbols, lots of winning sequences and now you’ll release the bonus game as well.
Before we tackle the bonus area, it's good to know that Electro Cubes also has a nudge feature which appears from time to time and randomly shifts rows and reels horizontally or vertically. The benefit here is that it could bring matching symbols to create payouts. The volatility setting is controlled in the bottom left-hand corner – you can either decide to go for 3/5 or 5/5.
Not much of an effort has gone into making the bonus game feel different to the base game but you will see a little more action, hopefully. You begin with five free spins but an extra five free spins can emerge when you get three consecutive Electro Wild Throws.
Wild symbols should be added to the grid more frequently, as will the nudge feature and wild multipliers.
As the wilds land during both the bonus game and the base game, they can produce multiplier values worth up to 10x and these will influence your final payout.
Fill the collect meter with winning symbols and you could get a little wild surprise. When you have three wins in a row, you'll see up to three wild symbols enter the grid. You also see x10 multipliers added to the wilds and if you completely fill the meter, you enter the bonus game.
Reach the end of the collect meter and you play five free spins with some added benefits. The wild throws become more frequent, grid nudges are also in abundance and the multipliers should be added more frequently to those wild symbols with values worth up to 10x. Extra spins are available.
The multiplier wilds don't offer crazy enhancements and you won't see anything progressive throughout the bonus game either. For this reason, it's hard to imagine where the 10,000x max win is going to come from. You should pick up decent payouts here and there though, and the size of these and frequency will depend on the volatility rating. It's up to you if you want to go for medium volatility or high volatility. I found that the lower risk version produced a more sustainable gaming session. The nudge feature can do you a huge favour if it produces some of the higher-paying symbols and the high-frequency features in the bonus game are also a welcome touch.
The design team has done a good job of keeping things simple but engaging at the same time. You will need to be a fan of basic slots though to appreciate this one. There's a fairly retro feel to it with an electronic soundtrack and neon lights making an appearance here and there. It's not the best-looking game in the world but it looks pleasant enough even on a smaller mobile screen.
Electro Cubes isn't a thrilling adventure but it does have the ability to fire off some wild multipliers here and there and then there's the promise of a 10,000x max win as well. It is a welcome break from some of the very stagnant slot themes I've come across recently, so credit where credit’s due for trying to be a little different.
