The Cygnus series continues with many similarities and equal stats. Cygnus 4 brought us a seemingly identical game nearly a year ago, so what will set number 5 apart from the rest?
At first glance, you might think ‘here we go again’. However, I've got to hand it to you ELK as they've managed to slide in a few subtle differences to make Cygnus 5 a worthy part of the series.
It begins in familiar territory with six rows which look more like columns and lots of round symbols working hard to land you wins. Winning clusters are made up of three, four, five or six matching symbols and they simply have to land on adjacent reels to grab you the payout.
The small coloured gems are the low payers and the larger picture symbols get you payouts of up to 5x. Winning symbols disappear and an avalanche takes place. At the same time as adding symbols to replace the old ones, they add extra symbols to create a new row. Eventually, you could have an immense number of paylines. At its maximum height, there are 262,144 ways to win.
Other symbols appear among the regular payers and these all have various effects on the action and your balance. The multipliers need to reach the bottom of the grid or the leftmost column before heading over to the meter on the left-hand side. Beyond adding multipliers to your wins, they can potentially make their way to the top of the column and produce the 50,000x max win. It all needs to happen in one continuous sequence though.
The prism symbols might reach the bottom and when they do so, they fire out one or more lines and create matching symbols to potentially land you a win.
The meteor strike can trigger randomly and replace symbols with special features such as wilds, prisms and free spins etc.
Wild symbols substitute for other regular payers and free spins symbols need to make it to the leftmost column to trigger the free games. If it's a regular free drop symbol, you pick up seven free spins and if you pick up the super symbol, you get the same number of spins but a guaranteed Meteor Strike with each spin.
X-iter options are available. Paying 3x will more than triple your chances of hitting a bonus game. 10x gets you a Meteor Strike 25x guarantees at least two prisms, 100x triggers the bonus game and 500x starts the super bonus.
Multiplier symbols can make their way to the bottom of the grid or the leftmost column where they’ll start to add to the meter to the side of the reels. Collect enough of them in the same winning sequence and you could see the 50,000x max win.
Prisms won’t take effect until they land on the bottom row of the grid, but when they get there, they can transform your fortunes! They’ll create at least 1 line across other symbols and turn everything in its path into matching symbols.
Out of the blue, you’ll see the lights of a meteor blast towards the grid. When the meteor hits the grid, it’ll replace regular symbols with special symbols, including wilds, prisms, multipliers and free drops.
If a free drops symbol makes it to the lefthand column, it’ll ignite the free spins bonus. You’ve got 7 free spins to collect as many wins as possible. If you enter the round with a Super symbol, you get a guaranteed Meteor Strike with each spin.
Technically, you can pick up the game's 50,000x max win at any point thanks to the multiplier symbols. However, I experienced much better rewards during the bonus game as the features and modifiers seemed to appear more frequently. The high volatility will tease you for a while but a big payout could be around the corner. The RTP is 94%.
Last time, we found ourselves in some sort of Dickensian London scene and the fifth instalment in this series takes us to Egypt I believe. It's a clean and crisp setup that looks great on small mobile phone screens as well, and the soundtrack it's very fitting. I couldn't get too excited about it but it looks nice enough.
Cygnus 5 offers a couple of extra modifiers that weren't available before but I'm not sure it's done a sufficient amount to warrant the need for another addition to this series. I feel like I'm approaching that awkward 8th season of my favourite TV show and I don’t want to end up resenting it!
