If you’ve ever wondered how to combine respins and free spins in one handy bonus, look no further than Apocalypse! There are three bonus games in total but they all feed into the same idea. It's clever, gritty and worthy of your attention.
You'll get 4,096 ways to hit a prize across this 6x4 set of reels and your basic payments come from five character symbols and five low payers. The lowest of the low only get you 0.05x for a three-of-a-kind, and the best of the bunch is 2.5x for a six-of-a-kind win. Not massive payouts, so you're going to need some modifiers to help things along.
Helping hands come in the form of wilds and some free spins. Wilds come along with the xNudge feature and this means that wild symbols will move down the rows and improve your payout potential.
Let's start with the regular xNudge Wild and these will land on the second, third, fourth and fifth reels. As they land, they nudge down to the bottom of the reels and increase any payouts by x1 with each step. If the symbol simply lands at the bottom straight away, it's just a regular wild. For the Super xNudge. you need one on both of the reels on the same road to activate. They drop down to the bottom and increase the payout multiplier by x1 but then they expand to cover the entire reel. The max multiplier can grow to x8 with the symbols multiplying by each other.
Heading into the free spins bonus, you'll need three or four scatter symbols to trigger Carnage and Doomsday Spins. They’re very similar and Carnage requires three whilst Doomsday requires four scatters.
It all begins with the Hoarding feature and you essentially have three respins that are reset each timer value symbol lands. Symbols have values worth up to 40x and when a column is complete, you get an extra spin in the next part of the feature.
After running out of spins, you move on to the Feasting section and you now have five additional spins if you went in on Carnage level and 10 spins if you achieved four scatter symbols and began with Doomsday level.
Rows at the top of the bottom become active and reveal character symbols which will modify your wins. These include symbol upgrades, multipliers and collectors. There is a persistent version of the five character symbols and you'll see these occasionally in the two bonus games.
There is an even better option and that requires five scatter symbols to land and trigger Cataclysm Spins. You'll play through the feasting section and then 10 spins with only persistent characters on offer in the enhanced reel sections.
Players outside the UK might have the option to pay 1.5x the stake to make it three times more likely to trigger the two basic spin bonuses and a direct purchase option can also be accessed. 80X will trigger Carnage Spins, 500x gets Doomsday Spins, 444x is a random chance of hitting either and 2000x gets you Cataclysm Spins.
I had a go at the Cataclysm Spins but unfortunately, the returns weren't as great as the investment. It would have been a decent 600x win had I gone in through the scatter symbol method, though! 2000x is a big gamble for those thinking about buying directly in but with 20,000x at stake, some will be tempted.
These bonus games are triggered by 3 or 4 scatters and both play out in the same way. Start by hoarding on the respins grid and picking up big multipliers of your bet. Next, move on to 5 Carnage Spins or 10 Doomsday Spins, depending on the number of scatters that got you there. Various modifiers join the game at this point.
Get everything that the other 2 bonus rounds offer and only persistent versions of the modifiers are in play. To trigger this feature, you’ll need 5 scatter symbols.
On the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th reels, you could see an xNudge Wild symbol that will nudge down to the bottom of the grid and increase payout multipliers by x1 each time it moves down.
The super version of this feature only lands on the third and fourth reels. You'll need them on the same row on both of these reels to activate. It drops down to the bottom and increases the multiplier by one for each step and expands across the entire reel.
Despite the fact that my balance didn't feel much love along the way, it's easy to see where the big wins might occur. High volatility means that the reels can go crazy at any moment and if you're sitting in one of the bonus games with those modifiers, you could be in for a huge surprise. The RTP is 96.03% and the most you can walk away with from this game is 20,000x.
I've never complained about a Nolimit City slot design before and I'm not about to start now. With a name like Apocalypse, you can probably imagine what's in store. It's a dark and depressing apocalyptic future with a deserted city image befitting of any movie of this ilk. The music is quite stirring and troubled and it turns a little frenzied throughout the bonus games as the guitars crank up several notches. It's easy to follow the action on smaller screens as well with mobile phones providing an acceptable reproduction of this good-looking game.
My overriding thought is that it’s only xNudges that are keeping the base game fun and interesting in Apocalypse. Apart from that, it's all about the bonus area and this could be a problem for some players - especially if they don't have an option to buy in directly in.
