Play takes place on a 5x4 game area and to win, you need to land matching symbols along the game’s 40 paylines, starting from the leftmost reel. The low-pay symbols consist of 10 to Ace, with a 5-of-a-kind being worth up to 5x the bet.
The high pays consist of a shield, a helmet, Helena and Antonius. Landing a 5-of-a-kind consisting of Antonius will pocket you 10x. Wilds can substitute for all these pay symbols and serve as pay symbols themselves, potentially winning you up to 25x the bet!
Land a Collect symbol on the reel 5 and you’ll scoop up the value of all the Cash Coins you have on screen. The Bronze Coins are worth between 1x and 5x the bet, Silvers are worth between 6x and 15x, and Golds are worth between 20x and 50x, plus there’s always the chance one of these coins will trigger the corresponding Bonus round.
The Collect symbols also carry a multiplier of between 1x and 5x, which is applied to the total value of the Cash Coins.
You start off with 3 Free Spins, but you can add more by landing Cash Coins or other special symbols. The Antonius symbol carries a multiplier of between 1x and 5x, which is added to the round's overall multiplier and there's also a Mystery symbol which can transform into one of Antonius, Helena or a Coin.
During any of the 3 Bonus rounds, you can also trigger any of the 3 jackpots. To win the Mini, which is worth 10x the stake, you need to land 10 coins. The Major jackpot is worth 50x, and requires 15 coins. 20 coins, however, will land you the Grand jackpot, which is worth 20,000x!
Land a Collect symbol on reel 5 and you’ll scoop up any Bronze, Silver and or Gold coins on the reels, which are worth between 1x and 50x.
Landing a coin can trigger one of the 3 respective bonuses at any time. Antonius symbols carry a multiplier of between 1x and 5x, which gets added to the round’s overall multiplier.
During the Bonus round, you’ll also be in with a chance of winning one of the game’s 3 jackpots. Land 10 coins to trigger the Mini, 15 for the Major and 20 for the Grand, which is worth up to 20,000x!
Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and give to God what is God’s. Give to me a generous RTP, medium volatility and a massive max win! Thankfully, Foxium put a lot of stock in this ancient adage, and not for the first time. The original slot was hugely popular, and no surprise given what it had to offer. Well, Rome: Fight for Gold Deluxe promises to offer all that and more!
I’ll get the game’s one arguable negative out of the way first - it’s nearly identical to the last instalment. There was nothing wrong with the original’s presentation; I just think they could’ve tweaked it a little further. We’re sat in the same Emperor’s VIP box at the Colosseum, listening to the same epic battle music that wouldn’t be out of place in Spartacus or Gladiator. Maybe the guys at Foxium didn’t change anything because the layout worked so well last time out.
The Cash and Collect symbols serve to keep the base game exciting, plus you never know when one of those coins might trigger one of the Bronze, Silver or Gold Bonus rounds. One major improvement on the last instalment is the fact that there are also 3 jackpots on offer, and you’ve got the potential to win any of them regardless of which type of Bonus game you’re playing—the Bonus rounds are really engaging as well. You only start off 3 respins and the tension between your decreasing number of spins and getting closer to a jackpot is super exciting.
A 20,000x maximus winus for a medium-volatile slot with a 96.37% RTP is insane! Perhaps one of Foxium’s developers pressed a wrong button during programming! On top of that, you’ve got 40 paylines and the Bonus rounds seemed to trigger quite frequently.
Even though the original was great, Rome: Fight for Gold Deluxe is definitely an improvement, especially with respect to the clarity of how you can actually trigger the game’s max win. The gameplay is as good if not better; however, the game’s win potential is what really sets this instalment apart. It’s got an even more generous RTP and jackpots are now on offer. Playing a medium-volatility game when you know there’s the potential to win 20,000x never gets old. Needless to say, when in Rome, have a few spins!
