Taking a trip along the famous Route 66 is the idea in this latest slot from Light & Wonder’s Partner studio, Crucible Gaming. Time to load up your shotguns and take aim at the road signs as we roast a little roadkill on an open fire and pluck those banjo strings.
Even though the majority of the action is focused on the bonus game, you've still got a bit of excitement to look forward to throughout the base game spins. It's all about the gas canisters and I'll tell you why in just a moment.
The basic pays occur across 243 paylines and these are made up of various symbols including some fruit machine classics, royals and picture symbols. Naturally, the royal symbols are the lowest payers and even five aces will only get you a 1.2x payout.
The bars are a bit better and the picture symbols grow up to 15x. The wild symbol will also produce the same payout for a group of five. However, you won't get anything for a group of three or four wilds. Wilds will substitute for all of the above-mentioned symbols.
Alongside these, you'll get the aforementioned gas canisters and for every four of those, you get to build up a guaranteed bonus win. A maximum of five gas symbols can land at any time and these are collected in a meter at the top of the screen. If you collect enough of these, you could have a guaranteed 100x win on your hands.
During free spins, wild symbols are persistent and it doesn't matter how much you win, you'll keep spinning until one of those wins pulls in the guaranteed minimum amount. Wild symbols will not land on the first reel and as you might have guessed, you're going to need a minimum of three bonus symbols to trigger this game.
You can't re-trigger the bonus spins, unfortunately.
For some players outside the UK, there is a bonus buy option and what this means is that you can pay 80x for the privilege of entering the bonus game. My main concern with this is that you get given a minimum guarantee amount but if you hit it on your first spin, you're not going to win anything else.
The idea is to pick up loads of small ones and then your final spin will be the one that equals or exceeds the bonus figure. It may happen but I wasn't lucky enough to see it. I tried a couple of times and I never matched the buy-in.
The purpose of the gas symbols is to build up a guaranteed win for when you arrive at the bonus game. Every 4 symbols increase the base total and this will be the minimum you can walk away with in the free spins bonus. It could grow to 100x.
Free spins is pretty similar to the base game except you now have a guaranteed win total. There is no limit to the spins – it just keeps going until you have won at least the guaranteed amount in one spin. Wilds are now persistent.
It’s always hard to see where a max win is going to come from in a game of such low volatility. And whilst this may save your balance from any pending doom, it does mean the wins will be fairly small. Thankfully, the max win here is only 2,700x, so it's not such a huge ask. As you know, you have 243 win lines and the RTP is a pretty standard 96%. I wouldn't expect anything else.
Some game developers put every ounce of energy into the design of their latest slot creation, but the same can't be said for Road Trip 66. It is a little ‘American casino floor’ in its approach and this means big, bright and bold. The subtleties are lost and there's no great detail in any aspect of the game. There are some animated elements but they're pretty clunky and hard to ignore. Nevertheless, you can pick up this game on a range of devices and the good news for mobile gamers is that it looks just as average on a smaller, mobile screen! One thing that the design has going for it is the selection of music. Simply click the musical note button and the radio station will change.
I can't get too excited about a game that is so obvious in its approach. There are no subtleties involved in the mechanic, gameplay or design for that matter. What you see is what you get and that is a pretty standard fruit machine/slot game that should be fairly forgiving on your balance whilst you spin the reels. The flip side of this is that you will be waiting for quite a while to see any big wins. I'm not convinced by the bonus buy-in options so players in the UK shouldn't feel left out.
