The action takes place on an eerie 7x7 grid. Why eerie? Well, instead of standard paylines, players benefit from the quite unique Area Win mechanic: when 4 matching symbols land on the grid to function as the corners of a square or rectangle, all the symbols within that area transform into that symbol, so you can end up with winning combinations of up to 49 symbols!
Once wins are collected, their symbols disappear and are replaced by more symbols, although Multiplier symbols, Pay Coins and unused Wilds stick in place until they’re either utilised or until no more winning combinations drop.

The Speech Bubbles are Wild symbols, and they can substitute for any pay symbol. If any Multiplier symbols fall within an Area Win, they are applied to that win. If more than one falls, their values are added together. If you land a winning combination made up of Jeff symbols, you trigger the Jeff feature: every symbol within the Area Win pays out as if it were an Area Win. A Scully Area Win triggers the Scully feature, meaning up to 3 pairs of symbols swap positions, potentially forming more Area Wins.
To enter the Bonus game, you need to land at least 3 Diamond symbols within an Area Win. You start the round with 10 free spins, and all multipliers and instant Pay Coins stick to the game area throughout. So far, the Area Wins have been the star of the show for me—I love trying out new ideas and this one definitely has an air of intrigue about it. But that’s just part of the story and there’s plenty more to pick apart before I start singing this slot’s praises too much!
The music is very minimalist and a little repetitive but there’s something very satisfying about the sound effects, especially when you land a win. Also, the snippets of paranoid conversation between the two titular characters did make me chuckle. The visuals are a bit underwhelming, but I think that’s because ELK Studios wanted to focus more on gameplay.
This is where Jeff and Scully stands out. The Area Win is a very interesting feature, and it’s more than just a gimmick. It is actually very engaging. The variety of symbol features on offer is a big plus, too.
A 10,000x max win isn’t bad at all! The game felt less stingy than its 94% RTP would imply, especially in the Bonus games, where Multipliers and Instant Pay Coins stick to the grid. You can also expect medium-high volatility.
The Area Win feature is great, as is the variety of symbol features. Although the presentation is a little lacklustre, the gameplay in Jeff and Scully is up there with some of the best slots out there.
