The action takes place on an eerie 7x7 grid. Why eerie? Well, instead of standard paylines, players benefit from the quite unique Area Win mechanic: when 4 matching symbols land on the grid to function as the corners of a square or rectangle, all the symbols within that area transform into that symbol, so you can end up with winning combinations of up to 49 symbols!
Once wins are collected, their symbols disappear and are replaced by more symbols, although Multiplier symbols, Pay Coins and unused Wilds stick in place until they’re either utilised or until no more winning combinations drop.
In ascending order of value, the pay symbols are chemtrails, cows, aliens, pyramids, JFK, moon landings, Scully, and Jeff. If you land a 4-symbol Area Win, you can win between 0.05x and 1x the bet. On the other hand, if you manage to land a massive 49-symbol win, you’ll pocket 5x to 25x the bet.
The Speech Bubbles are Wild symbols, and they can substitute for any pay symbol. Although Wilds normally stick until they’re either used or until there are no more wins, if a Wild is used to form an Area Win, it is removed on the redrop. Finally, You want to avoid the Blocker symbols, as these only serve to block positions in the game area.
If any Multiplier symbols fall within an Area Win, they are applied to that win. If more than one falls, their values are added together. If any Pay Coins are part of an Area Win, you pocket those as well. Area Wins of 24 symbols or more will increase the value of your multipliers and pay coins. If you land a winning combination made up of Jeff symbols, you trigger the Jeff feature: every symbol within the Area Win pays out as if it were an Area Win. A Scully Area Win triggers the Scully feature, meaning up to 3 pairs of symbols swap positions, potentially forming more Area Wins.
To enter the Bonus game, you need to land at least 3 Diamond symbols within an Area Win. You start the round with 10 free spins, and all multipliers and instant Pay Coins stick to the game area throughout. You’ll also notice that subsequent Diamond symbols accumulate on a meter above the game area. If you accumulate 3, you’ll retrigger the Bonus round. Get to 4, and you’ll trigger the Super Bonus round.
Both in the standard game and the Bonus game, if you land 4 Diamond Scatter symbols, you enter the Super Bonus game. It’s basically the same as the standard Bonus game, except for one major difference: the multipliers and instant pay coins increase their value with every drop!
Players outside the UK will be able to take advantage of ELK Studios’ X-iter function. First off, is the option to increase the chances of triggering the Bonus game, which costs 3x the bet. For 10x the stake, you get to play with a full grid of symbols. 25x the bet will trigger either the Jeff or Scully feature. Immediate access to the Bonus round costs 100x the bet. 500x the bet will give you immediate access to the Super Bonus round.
If 4 matching symbols fall to form the corners of a square or rectangle, all normal pay symbols within that area transform into that symbol and pay out according to the size of the area. Players also benefit from any Multipliers and instant Pay Coins within the area, too.
If the corners of your Area Win are made up of Jeff symbols, every other type of pay symbol within the area pays out as an entire Area Win. If the corners of your Area Win consist of Scully symbols, other pay symbols swap positions, thereby increasing your chances of forming more Area Wins.
Land 3 Diamond Scatter symbols within an Area Win and you’ll whiz off to the Bonus Round, where you’ll start with 10 free spins. Plus any Multiplier or Instant Pay Coins will stick to the grid and remain there until the end of the round.
Land 4 Diamond Scatters in either the standard game or standard Bonus game and players will get their 10 (extra) free spins and they’ll see the values of their Multipliers and Instant Pay Coins increase with every spin.
So far, the Area Wins have been the star of the show for me—I love trying out new ideas and this one definitely has an air of intrigue about it. But that’s just part of the story and there’s plenty more to pick apart before I start singing this slot’s praises too much!
The music is very minimalist and a little repetitive but there’s something very satisfying about the sound effects, especially when you land a win. Also, the snippets of paranoid conversation between the two titular characters did make me chuckle. The visuals are a bit underwhelming, but I think that’s because ELK Studios wanted to focus more on gameplay.
This is where Jeff and Scully stands out. The Area Win is a very interesting feature, and it’s more than just a gimmick. It is actually very engaging. The variety of symbol features on offer is a big plus, too.
A 10,000x max win isn’t bad at all! The game felt less stingy than its 94% RTP would imply, especially in the Bonus games, where Multipliers and Instant Pay Coins stick to the grid. You can also expect medium-high volatility.
The Area Win feature is great, as is the variety of symbol features. Although the presentation is a little lacklustre, the gameplay in Jeff and Scully is up there with some of the best slots out there.
